Fucking thing keeps checking for updates in the middle of MW2 which makes Windows decide to draw the whole desktop to show me the icon changing colour and consequently pages MW2 off to disk while it does it which means it all then has to reload back to memory.

This is mildly irritating in the middle of a game.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH !!!!

Funnily enough I don't remember it doing it in COD4 or 5 last time I had to venture Winwards... :/

What will stop it doing this ?

I don't use it but... can you not turn off auto update check? If only while you're in the middle of a game..

Are you letting it run the scheduled scans? It checks for updates before it does them and if it's trying to run a scan whilst you're playing it would trigger that.

If not maybe run one while you're out one day to shut it up?

Nah - it's not scanning. It does that on Sundays. Just checking for updates. Nowhere I can see to configure when it does that.

Hmmm, is it possible that MSE just uses whatever setting you have on Windows Update ? Indeed I can't find any MSE Updates-specific settings for a schedule... but I know mine only updates if I login as Administrator or do it by hand.

I do have Windows Updates set to only notify me of availability, not attempt to download anything by itself (and again it only even does that if I login as Admin).
