Scoring

Does anyone know how the scoring and promotion works?

I played the first few missions last night, and I scored an amazing -100 on the taking of the 2nd town on Everon. Also, all the squad are Corporals excpet lowly Private me.

What am I doing wrong? (or am I just a piss-poor soldier?)

I fix promotion is fixed? Reason being is when a squad member dies earlier on the next highest ranked player takes over. The game does not want to throw you in at the deep end so keeps you working as a grunt to start with.
