what bollocks, if they were taught properly, or had the will to learn then they wouldn't be scared in the first place.

Nah, the teaching (atleast from what I've heard, and from my experiences) is really good, been taught properly; and everything that was necessary, it's not that. It's just more the shock of going into it, realising you've got ONE shot at the real thing (I wish they made people realise how weird it is going in there the first time, it's not the same as mock exams. As far as I remember) and that's quite scary for people who are 15-16.

Suppose not being 20 yet makes me sympathise with em. (Even though I don't sit exams anymore)

Ah well.. Give it 5 years, no one will care. Failing GCSEs (Well, not getting A-Cs) still means you CAN go to uni and do what you want ^^ Just takes longer.

How in sweet fuck are the A-Levels easy?

Try out some of the proper ones like Further Maths & Triple Science - else hush.

I am one of those people who panic and forget things in exams blablablaand some kids can panic because they think if they dont hit the grade then thats it, i know, i felt like this

Sorry, but I'm not having any of this. This relates to what was mentioned earlier about making students feel like 'they've achieved something' when to be honest you should only achieve something if you actually bloody achieve it. To me it's like saying that it's not fair because other people are better (as in they achieved higher scores not better as a person because we are all beautiful human beings inside and all that shit). Exams are way of measuring and with them you've got the high scorers, above average, average and dare I say it.. below average. (I'm not P.C. sorry to disappoint you).

Hence why some of my rubbish science results because i went over the top of revising for them and heavily panicked/nervous about doing the exam.

There are no excuses, you get what you get. Is that what you're going to tell your potential employer? Didn't think so.

Whilst looking at what i got a good result in, e.g. English i didnt even revise. I turned up to the exam having only read an idea essay and the book for the paper, i didnt have a care whether i passed at C or A for this aslong as the pass was on paper, and because of the lack of nerves and care i walked the exam with a clear head and had no problems.

Well pardon me if I'm wrong but I thought English people are meant to understand their own language. When I was in school there were about 15 of us in the top set of English and 7 of us who weren't English.

50px-Spain_flag_mini.png

Personally I'd be ashamed if a 'foreigner' was better than me at my own language.

If you can make anything from the mumbo jumbo, its that people arent thicker etc,

Sorry, yes they are.

its just it seems like the pressure is that immense, if you really want that subject at a good grade, the stress is really bad, like OD said, as you can tell ive myself just came outta gcse's (even though i passed all of my subjects at a decent grade) it was the most pressured rised time ever

Do you think it's any different for the others? Just because some people can make something look easy doesn't mean that it is easy.

i was constantly told if i screw these up ill end ruining my life that it wouldnt be worth bothering and that these 2 years are the most important of your life, it all adds up and piles on to the end

Wrong, you won't ruin your life but you'll be making a very very shitty start to it.

Sorry to be so blunt and make myself out to be an absolute **** but I'm just stating what I believe to be facts without all the sugar coating on it otherwise known in today's world as political correctness.

Peace and love,
gunz

The a-level subjects themselves are not easier, but the it is easier to get an A as they have been sneakily lowering the score requried for each grade.

So an A may have been 80% 5 years ago and only 60% now....

Thats a big part of the problem - you really only want the very top echelon of students attaining A grades. Lots of A-grades = exams too easy.

Prospective employers need to be able to filter out the high achievers from the low achievers, although I'm still of the opinion that its practical skills and common sense that matter in this world.

I think so too but it's not any easier on employers. Thank god for probation periods.

Why am I agreeing with you though? You draw feet :(

Its not that low, I think its 70%, 65 for a b (possibly 60 or so), other grades are useless anyway :p (says a man with a BCD ;) )

I agree with this up to a point; it is a fact that exams are less than ideal as an overall method of assessment though. When I was at Uni I'd regularly get Firsts or 2i grades during the year and for my dissertation, but in exams I usually underperformed, to the point where my course tutor and classmates commented on it. I came out with a good degree in the end, but I regard that as luck more than anything; especially in subjective courses. If you happened to press the right buttons with the examiner you'd get a better grade, but overall, essay type subjects are marked harder. It was telling on my course (Management Science) that every single First came from the group in the 'analytical' stream (Stats, Business Operation Control, computing etc.) where answers were specific, and in the Marketing & HR streams the best any of us did was 2i. For some subjects exams are more valid than others, but either way I still think a mix of continuous assessment and exams with equal weight to both, is the right way.

That's true as it allows for a better overall assessment but I think the point I was trying to make was that when it's time to sit an exam, you're not going to whine and say you shouldn't sit it because you aren't good at exams. You just have to get it over with and give it the best you've got. Everyone else has to do it.

It may not be the best form of assessment but it's how you're being assessed.

Anyone getting less than an A in that paper should be shot dead upon leaving the exam hall in order to preserve the gene pool and to stop neanderthals pissing in it.

Further Maths is a piece of piss, it's easier than normal A-Level maths IMO. Try doing some degree level mech eng maths, I looked at my flatmates coursework once and almost had a heart attack ;)

I read somewhere that A level passes are going up in private and selective grammar schools, but no better/worse in most state schools.. if that's true then all the "A-levels are getting easier" hysteria is probably wrong and it just highlights how crappy teaching and the students themselves have become in state schools.. and if THAT problem isn't tackled, then things are screwed.

Either way, I worry for the future.. but then, I worried when I was back at school and I looked at half the people in the class :p

I think I'd have done better in my GCSE's and A-levels if they were harder. The problem is that the mark schemes and model answers are given to teachers who then just make the students repeat them over and over again in the weeks leading up to exams. I can't really speak for other people but when I've just been taught a model answer rather than given the knowledge to be able to arrive at the answer on my own I just switch off in the exam and run on auto pilot, regurgitating stuff I've done over and over. Some people might get better marks this way but my attention just wonders and I miss out silly things that would be at the forefront of my mind if I was actually having to work something out for myself.

Exams are a great way of measuring them, so the overall 2years arent good enough?, so when you put all the effort in over those years just so you get told over one little paper that you may aswell have not tried. I'm clueless as to what you getting at, so those bright kids who cannot face exams are tarnished as thick with that logic?

Ofc there isnt, but there is reason for it, personally some who past exams arent very smart its just that it doesnt phase them thus they are able to do well in them.

Sorry, yes they are.

Really and where the actual proof of this, statistics etc?

Do you think it's any different for the others? Just because some people can make something look easy doesn't mean that it is easy.

No, but some people can deal with pressure others cant.. some people are able to thrieve of pressure and the idea of having to work out a problem in a certain amount of time whilst for others it just makes em panic and forget. Yes, this does also affect how easy you find a paper, you can make silly mistakes when you panic as you try and rush through things which does infact make the paper much harder.

Yes, i know it wont, and i know i havent since i got all my grades at A-C (2 A's 10 B's 2 C's), but it can as it means alot harder work would have to be put in and so forth.
How does P.C come into this, are you just desperate to mention it or something, how does P.C come into such a thing as exams, i really do miss your point on that.

Are you saying you did 14 GCSE's? You do realise they aren't worth the paper they're written on.

Exams are meant to be hard, the pressure is MEANT to be there, thats the whole point. It's teaching you that life is a **** and you cant go around crying whenever it gets tough. I've been thru the current system within the last 10 years (from GCSE to degree in physics/comp sci) and it was hard but I got thru. The people who "couldnt cope with the stress" were the lazy ***** who left everything til the last minute.

This ties in with trying to make students want to feel like they've achieved something even though they have, purely by percentage scores, failed. Why are we trying to make people believe that not good enough is good enough?

Ofc there isnt, but there is reason for it, personally some who past exams arent very smart its just that it doesnt phase them thus they are able to do well in them.

Some people take the short road from A to B (those that seem to breeze past exams as if they were nothing) and others take the long road (those that spend hours/days/weeks on end studying and working hard to get their result). Either way, they've managed to get to the 'desired' destination. Suffering a breakdown halfway doesn't get you anything.

I got an A/B in english, whats your point?
My point is that for someone who got an A/B in English, your spelling is fucking terrible.

Really and where the actual proof of this, statistics etc?
Come on, you want me to PROVE that there is in fact a divide between the 'smart' and the 'stupid'?

No, but some people can deal with pressure others cant.. some people are able to thrieve of pressure and the idea of having to work out a problem in a certain amount of time whilst for others it just makes em panic and forget. Yes, this does also affect how easy you find a paper, you can make silly mistakes when you panic as you try and rush through things which does infact make the paper much harder.
This is the same as saying "If I worked as hard as Bill Gates I could be as rich as him." In theory, this is very possible and in that sense we are all potentially equals but we both know that it doesn't work like that.

How does P.C come into this, are you just desperate to mention it or something, how does P.C come into such a thing as exams, i really do miss your point on that.

P.C. comes into it because now people aren't allowed to call the stupid kids 'stupid'. Once when we were teaming up for a group assessment I refused to accept someone into my group because I felt she was too stupid and would do nothing but lower the group's grade.

Result?

She tells teacher, teacher tells parent, parents speak to teacher who then speaks to me.

I didn't care, I stuck to my guns and served my Friday detention after school and we ended up passing with flying colours while she had to cut her summer short to do her resit.

Maybe people should take more pride in what they're writing, even if it is 'just a forum'. I wouldn't give a fuck about my spelling if it was IRC, but this shit here is imprinted in the sands of the internet forever. So people should probably try not making themselves look like spastics.

Yaka not included :)

Because it means that the reader of a post written like that will instantly think "retard". There are degrees of poor spelling, and missing out most apostrophes and shortening some common words is par for the course on the internet. Talking like a 12 year old who couldnt even read real english let alone write it gives the impression you are just that: a 12 year old fool and no one will give you the time of day.
