I thought red mars was a bit dull.

I'd go for the Greg Bear/I.M. Banks options mehself.

Kim Stanley Robinsons' Mars Trilogy is brilliant; a serious accurate story about ecology, environment, terraforming, politics, sociology and economics.

The Nightsdawn Trilogy by Peter F Hamilton has big a space battles and the dead returning to possess the living.

Iain M Banks is just cool :)

Stephen Baxter rights some good stuff about space exploration.

David Weber's Honour Harrington Books are about spaceships blowing the shit out of each other.

Assimov, Heinlein, Clarke and Wells are classic authors that should be read by everyone as should Philip K Dick, Ursa le guin Michael Moorcock

Frank Herbert Dune series is about messiahs and sand :p

William Gibson is a Cyber prophet and is great but somehow out of date already :D

hmm... thats just the books lying about my pc desk and I can't be arsed checking the shevles. Sci-fi is actually really vague as a description, what aspect are you interested in?

I've read almost everything Vance has done. The man's powers of simple, yet uber vivid discriptions are second to none :)

I've heard the Amtrak Wars series is good, my mates got all of them. Personally I would say the X-wing series, or the Halo series even though theres only 2 books at the moment.

David Brin - the uplift war. 6 books, all good.
M.K. Wren - the Phoenix Legacy, post mad-max era with space battles.

How about 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to The Galaxy - A trilogy in Five Parts'. Very strange and vastly superior to the tv series.
