Scariest Film of All Time

People dont really make "scary" horror films any more, it's all about blood and snot (see Hostel, House of a 1000 corpses, Hoboken Hollow etc).

Poltergeist scared the crap out of me when I was little.......thank god TV went 24hr, I used to hate that white noise screen after that.

and like others have said, first Nightmare on Elm Street film, great concept, scary as hell..

Event Horizon is one of the best scary films I've seen in a while, really atmospheric, reminded me of the first Alien film (another scary one).


It's all about immersion really (for me anyway) I need to be pulled into the film and feel like Im there with the character for them to get to me.

oh God, The Shining, thats the one. A perfect example of a film being as scary as hell without needing buckets of severed heads everywhere. Just popped into my head then while I was writing this...."Red Rum.....Red Rum"....

Hellraiser is an extremely fucked up film - more a case of 'wtf' than 'shit this is le scary.'

I know that a killer clown isn't going to come after me and it's unlikely that I will contract some kind of alien disease which will kill me but imitate my body perfectly, but nuclear war is a real possibility. This makes it scary.

I've always had a profound fear of nuclear war, anyway. The thought of seeing the blinding flash, hearing the ear-splitting explosion, and then seeing a mushroom cloud rising a mile into the sky above just scares the shit out of me. Then, if you survive, what comes afterwards would probably be even worse than the bomb itself. I often have terrifying nightmares about this kind of thing, so I guess I'm pretty screwed up.

Can't remember the name, but whats that film where they have that new type of spaceship that can jump into different dimensions, but they jump into hell? Scary as fuck. Watched it in a thunderstorm and literally 2 seconds into the end credits there was a huge lightning flash and all the power cut out v atmospheric.

apart from that, the ring trilogy will fuck you up as well.

I still find Alien and Aliens2 scary, though Aliens 2 actually stops being scary when the critters show up.

Evil Dead and its sequels are scary in a slapstick comedy kind of way

And I believe The Descent is really scary, but I've never seen it because I am the sort who gets nightmares from this kind of stuff

tbh these days with everyone as desensitised as they are its bloody hard to find a film that actually "frightens" you, so i usually go for either the old classics where you can pretend to hide behind a pillow and scream "fgs noooo dont take your kit off YOUR GONNA DIE!! noooo dont start running half nekkid chick you know your going to trip over a blade of grass then YOUR GONNA DIIIIIIE!!!" or the ever trusty creature features!
