Save Firefly - Please!!!

I don't know how much is known about this series generally...so I'll quickly fill you in.

Joss Whedon's Firefly was broadcast in America last year, and recently on Satellite over here, and it's easily the best Sci-Fi show to come about in years. Fantastic writing, that trademark Whedon blend of comedy, drama and action, superb sfx and best of all, believable, interesting characters.

It was broadcast at an awful timeslot for such a show, yet garnered very impressive figures. However the executives at Fox, who are known for cancelling great shows before they get a chance, pissed about with the scheduling then decided that they didn't understand it and cancelled it.

I can't express my disappointment over this enough. The beginnings of some huge arcs were becoming apparent and it could have gone for years, and from strength to strength.

Undeterred, Whedon has promised a big screen movie version, and sorted out a DVD set for the US this December.

Despite reporting strong pre-order figures, Fox then decided to cancel the DVD unless Amazon US generates a certain amount of interest. How much is anybody's guess. So in order for the show to ever see light on DVD (and thus make me marginally happier) people need to enter their address on Amazon's site, right here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...yfansne-20/103-5136233-9555013?v=glance&s=dvd

If you've seen some, and you're into it, then go there to ensure you'll get it on DVD one day if you haven't, and appreciate great new TV, please do what you can to check out an episode or two, and if you enjoy it, get on there and show FOX what a bunch of muppets they really are.

Hell, just take two minutes to enter an email address, even if you're not interested! ;)

Wow just saw this thread after watching episode 13 of firefly :)

It's one my favourite sci-fi series and I was really dissapointed when they cancelled it. Right from the first episode I loved it. It has great characters and so many potential storylines that I thought it'd be going on for years. Some of the stories aren't the best but the acting and humour really make it work.

Episodes are pretty well spread on P2P networks but if anyone is desperate then drop me a PM and I'll hook you up. I don't see the harm in distributing a cancelled show that most people will never see.

Right, it's set after a huge war, where the central planets formed an alliance and said everyone had to join their rule. Many of the outer "rim" worlds disagreed and fought for their freedom but were beaten.

Mal Reynolds is a captain whose only priority is to stay alive, keep his crew alive and find enough work to keep them going while avoiding contact with the alliance (he fought for Independence). He's joined by a ragtag crew of mercenaries including a hilariously funny pilot, an asshole of a tough guy (Jayne - "JaynesTown" is a superb ep Yaka!), a high class escort (which is, in the future, the most respected of all occupations), a preacher with a secretive past and a girl who was experimented on by the alliance and who is now on the run.

There's no aliens in Firefly's universe, and it has an odd look because while the inner planets are much like you'd expect from the future, the outer planets are poorer and don't have so much technology, so they've had to go back to basics living in old-style houses and using, for example, horses, for travel and work. This can occasionally give it a "cowboys in space" look which puts some people off...it's quite an unfair appraisal of the show anyway. It's really different from other sci-fi on many levels like this - the Serenity (the ship) doesn't even have any on-board weaponry!

Most of the best storylines come about via the conflict of morality vs. legality. Mal has no problems taking on jobs which are against alliance law, but tries to do right by innocent people where he can. It's never black and white and throws some interesting concepts up - like, you've been contracted to rob a shipment from a train, from a man you do not want to double-cross, yet when you finish the job you discover you've stolen a crate of medicine, and now people will die as a result...what do you do?

Apparently it owes a lot to Blake's 7 - though never saw it personally.

I'm anti-Firefly, mainly because I think it was the reason Buffy / Angel became less-good during recent times. Death to the DVD!

Although the writers got some good jokes in on the petultimate episode. The Execu-bots :) I loved the random one with the dice.

*throw dice*

"More reality TV shows and Game Shows"

As for Firefly, I've only watched one episode (Set on one of these backwards, horse planets) and didn't really enjoy it. I'm willing to give it a chance from the begining if the DVD is released. Put as many mail address as I have in the "inform me" box.

I was just wondering if anyone knew who the Shepherd really is seeing as we're probably never gonna find out from the series.

The evidence:

He knows a lot about guns and crime.

After knocking him out, the bounty hunter says, "That ain't no Shepherd."

When he got shot and they took him to that Alliance hospital they weren't gonna treat him until they checked his ID card and then whisked him in immediately.

Any ideas? Or is it too geeky? :p

There seems to have been a horrible trend of allowing big studios to ger rid of classic shows and keep the diabloical ones. We need some new executive blood at the likes of FOX.

Christ, the cancelled Space : Above and Beyond after leaving a cliffhanger ending. Why!!? If you know the series has been canned, why even show a cliffhanger ending.

All show that get cancelled should be given cancelling money in order to create one last episode that ties up all the loose ends.

Even if it's just a "And they all got blown up by green space aliens" ending, it's still gives some closure.

Rant over

End of Line........
