So how do these thingys work then?

If i buy one can i just plug it in and expect it to work?

They're just hard drives. As long as your motherboard supports SATA then it's just the same as plugging in an IDE drive. You just plug it into the SATA socket instead.

depends :) there are 2 situations.

a) you already have a running windows install and dont want to install windows on the sata drive.

In that case just hook it up and install drivers, then fdisk/format fill with porn

b) You want to install windows on the sata drive.

Prob here is that most sata controlers are not found during windows install.
during the install choose (install aditional drivers or samthing like that(think its F4 in the begining of the install "the blue dos screen").
But the windos install is a bit gay and wont read the drivers from cd, so you need to create a floppy with the drivers on. after that its plain sailing

Yup....

- get drivers from website (or from a cd that came with the mobo) and put on floppy
- start windows setup
- press F6
- select correct controller
- next next finish reboot ;)
