Sars

"Sars" sounds like a pretty hip and trendy sounding virus to me, better than your run-of-the-mill "flu". "Can't come into work today boss, got SARs y'see.. yeah, that new thing.. picked it up in Prague. Ciao!"

Although it's gonna have a tough job to topple Ebola, the undisputed King of virii. Now there's a virus with some serious street cred.

I like all those people who claim to get flu, they normally fail to understand that if you get flu you can't hardly move....Sir you have a bad cold ;)

if you replace 11 with 14... then I'm in a pretty much identicle situation to you.... fancy going halves on funeral expenses? :p

Ooh, a BW funeral. We could ask the funeral home to dress our faces up yellow and smiley.

Ebola is a superb virus, its my favourite, but its too damn deadly for its own good. It makes people far too ill too quickly to spread it over a large distance, and it only grips so badly in some countries because of their habit of dressing the corpses of the dead (and therefore ploughing through ebola drenched fluids). Its a droplet infection, its not airborne in the strictest sense, so really Sars has the potential to be far more deadly than ebola.

I've had the flu twice in my life.

The first was about 6 years ago, details hazy...

But the second was only a month ago :/ if that.

Laid me out cold for half a week. Shakes, fever, aching - felt like I wanted to die :(

The really nasty thing about SARS is that it has probably migrated from being an animal only virus to affecting humans as well - this means nobody will have any effective resistance to it and though it isnt universally fatal given decent medical care if that care is lacking or overwhelmed by sheer numbers it could get nasty.

The other problem is that it is probably here to stay and will eventually take its place next to colds/flu etc - in a few years time it could be commonplace for people to be hospitalized due to an outbreak of SARS...

Something that winds me up is that some people who are meant to be in quarantine are so fucking retarded. In Canada, a guy who has been exposed to SARS and who was meant to be staying at home in quarantine went to work with flu like symptoms, and is infact believed to now have SARS (cue another 200 people in quarantine thanks to twat features). Authorities in Hong Kong are looking for a Chinese woman with SARS symptoms who has escaped from quarantine.

Frankly, these people deserve to die coughing in a gutter, or at least to be slapped around the face with Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

When I'm feeling less bitchy, I'll moderate that to a jail sentence after they finish their incubation period, regardless of whether they got sick or not.

Humans will be humans. Panic, pretend they are okay, get afraid, etc.

Stupid nonetheless :(

Why contain it? Let it spill over into the streets. In the end, they'll beg us to save them!

Yeah, you think the Chinease government losing 5% of its population would think that a bad thing?

They probably designed and released it themselves :p

I think this is getting worrying now. I was listening to the radio the other day, and they had some expert on who said roughly the following:

'when a case is detected over here, the hospital is immediately quarantined. The people who have possible contact are quarantined. How many 3rd world countries are going to be able to do this?'

'The thing is that with AIDS there was a lot of misinformation about toilet seats, physical contact, etc. With SARS, all of these things and more are possible'

Food for thought.

The mortality rate is currently running at 5%, so If you're not old, young or infirm, apart from getting a nasty flu you should be ok.

I believe you get Pnuemonia.
I had this 18 months ago, it went undiagnosed for 2 weeks due to shit GP, "it's just a chest infection". One night while lying on the landing floor unable to breath I thought I was dying, as did Mrs Yuck, you could say there was fear and panic. Not being able to get your breath at all is a very scary thing.
You might not die, but you wouldn't want it.

And it has also killed fit and healthy patients before, sparking concern that it had mutated into something worse. It hadn't, it just somehow killed them anyway.

I think the next two weeks will show whether Englands going to get slammed or not, with all the students starting back at university combined with the final influx of ex pats leaving Hong Kong.

Remind me to not leave the house and lock my parents out.

Can cats carry the virus? :/

The news, like the ITN news just on ITV, is really over doing this....sort of like news reports regarding Iraq, when one man fired a gun at allies is was called strong oppersition.

I don't think the news is over doing it at all. I think the news has been guilty of over doing things in the past, which is why many people feel the same about this, but I think Sars is something that should be in the forefront of reporting.

It's new. They're not sure how its spread. They haven't even properly identified the virus. It incubates for a long enough period for it to spread over large distances, and its believed to survive outside of the body for up to 24 hours. There is no vaccine, and as its new, no natural immunity in the public. It's not like some flesh eating virus where three people get it in a week and the press wets themselves, this is thousands of people have contracted it so far, and whilst Toronto seems to be getting a grip (though it will be interesting to see how it will show after a commuter contracted it) China seems to be totally fucked in the battle to contain it.

Whats worse, something like ebola which will infect 400 people and kill 320 of them before dying out, or something that has the potential to infect thousands upon thousands, and kill roughly 5% of them (and thats in areas with a health system thats functioning)?

Still sounds pretty tame imo.

SARs needs to get busy with the killin' if it has any hope of reaching the CDC Premier League. Ebola and Lassa Fever tied for the top with a few deaths in hand, and Leprosy, Scurvy and Mange fighting to stay out of the relegation zone....

It's not looking good for the new disease on the block.
