If you've got BBB the same as us the lag is the same with both servers, as the packets use the same route with both of them. I know what you mean, it is barely playable as it is now and I also feel sometimes like I should cancel my subscription to Daoc. I will however wait a while and see what happens, plus perhaps contact a few people (see above).
I have sent an email to the guy at Global Crossing and got an answer from him the next day (he was even faster then the support team at BBB ). He couldnt fix the problem right away, but it sounded like they are looking in to stuff and he forwarded our mails to the traffic engineer guys...
Keep your fingers crossed, there might be able to do some improvements.
Also, its very important that you do mail BBB if you have them as your ISP (or your ISP if you still got heavy lag). The more ppl who shows them theres a problem, the bigger the chance is that they do something about it.
Have a related question (i think). Have been having lag spikes aswell, going ld. But then i cannot log back in. I get 201 errors. This has never happend before. After i start up my comp, wait for 15 min. start it up again.. then maybe i can log back in again...
Any of you have an idea if this could be related to the routing problem or know how i can solve it?
Sorry DeSlisser, when i go ld i can log right back in (sometimes faster then my account is beeing logged out).
I dont know what the 201 errors are, but i remember i got them quite often at patch day when trying to download the patch (alongside 20000 other players).
Send a mail to rightnow about it, i dont think it got anything to do with the routing problem.
Just to let you all know that there is a maintenance scheduled for Dec 10th to increase
capacity on the leg you see problems. This will hopefully cure the latency problem
you have been suffering.
Happy gaming

this is from a guy at global crossing, regarding that troublesome router for all BBB-users...
hooray!
/crosses fingers and pray to god that it will work better
I play on the Excalibur server and it has not been better today. Granted, there's a new routing table, but its 19 hops instead of 15 (minor) but it takes a route through more countries now.
Also, I checked with pingplotter and the result is bad, really bad:
it doesnt really matter how many hops the packets take, its where the packets go thats important. My packets make 25 hops and it flows pretty good now despite that. My guess is that you are routed over one of globals routers that have problems, they are going to do a maintenance the 10th december and redirect some traffic and upgrade a bit, hopefully this means you will have less problems.
Another note is that it aint serverspecific at all, my packets take the same way whether i play on Pryd or Excal.
The global router that was worst before was out of the routing table when I did that test, yet there was more spikes than before (during those 8 minutes of testing), which I found frightening. The ping and max times for all routers was pretty much linear but the spikes with 100% packetloss was more frequent.
The packetloss in that pic is caused by the isp as it starts already at hop 1. BBB had a temporary problem with the net 1-2 days ago, this might be during that time. I got similar results when plotting during the problem, only longer times with packetloss. That problem hasn't appeared again for me though.
Although I appretiate the work you all have put in I still think it is to laggy with to many "spikes".
I'm from sweden with BBB as my ISP (incredibly cheap and good speed otherwise) and have been having these spike problems for a couple of months now, when it was totally lag free before that (been playing since beginning or march 02)
As a Cleric you might understand that it is frustrating when not only yourself is affected.
Anyway, have been sending letters to GOA (same response as some others here) but not much has changed.
The ping I get is descent, but what kills me is the "pikes" that occure almost every minute. I get Yellow triangles or Red boxes regurarely every other minute for 10-15 secs.
I'de be happy to send reports and try and get them to corect any problems (I managed to get them to fix a 80-90% packet drop problem early 02, only took me 2-3 weeks of nagging at the customer support)
I tested yesterday 2003-01-02 and I got about 30% packet loss, and that is whats seems to be causeing problems for me, even if the ping wasn't that bad (about 30-35ms)
I'll monitor this thread from now on for any more results. Maybe we can all join in and send reports. Just supply an address and what to write and I'll nagg
I've got the same problem as you nowadays, and have had so also for several months. For a while there, when we had problems with the gblx routers it was totally unplayable for me though. Now it's playable, but those spikes are pretty damn annoying. The traces I've done to the server are close to clean. I've got a few pingspikes close to my comp about once every 3-4 mins or something. And some pingspikes at the gameserver or close to it, perhaps 2 times per minute, usually not bad spikes though. What to do at the moment? Don't really know. Someone said in the Excalibur/general thread (http://forums.barrysworld.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42952 ) that BBB was working on this problem, so I'm hoping on that. Also, as I mentioned in another thread somewhere (these BBB threads are everywhere atm.. ) I've read that this patch is pretty laggy in itself, and that it seems to get better next patch. Maybe our lag gets worse because of this? I don't know, just a thought. If that is the case though we might see a bit of improvement next patch.
