I just woke up and this could probably have been made a lot more intelligible, but meh.
It's because your eyes are trying to tell you that they see a white square, because of the checkered pattern. We all know that the shadow will cause whatever is underneath it to be darker (less light being cast innit) so we are fooled by the shadow.

ohhh yeah.. you can just see a very faint RWB Flag (Like the Yanks) but then it goes away after a few seconds...
