If you kill a child, you should be hung.
If you rape a child you should be gassed.

etc etc etc

Funny poll btw, because it excludes the possibility that somebody is against it for other reasons that "might hit the wrong one" (which is basically a pro-death penatly answer).

i think the word that sticks in my eye the most is virtually, so untill it can be absolutely proven with out a shadow of a doubt then i'd be highly suspicious of it.

oh and btw i dont see the rape/murder of a child as having any more gravity than the rape/murder of an adult, yes i will admit it takes a special kind of sick to do it but i don't see a childs life as being more valuable than anyone elses.

I do have a feeling that it will be considered in the future if prisons keep filling up the way they are though, if not as a deterrant than just as a way to keep the numbers down.

There was a case on the tv a few days ago about a man who killed his x gf and was put away for 7 yrs, served about 4 then was let out.... to kill another gf and i think (though i could be wrong) he failed to kill her and killed her 3 children instead. I do feel that people who are consistant reoffenders should probably get the death penalty because its either than or lock them up until they drop dead on their own just to keep innocent people safe.

i dont see why people should be given chance after chance and i honestly can not see the point in trying to punish or rehabilitate someone if they show that they are just going to go out and ruin another innocent life, and with people like that it is rare that you'd get the wrong guy... but then we have the thing of witch hunts and just framing people to keep the numbers down and it all goes belly up so its a tough one.

while i agree that rapists, murderers and paedophiles should be skinned and fed live to pigs there is always the risk of an innocent person getting punished, as has happened in the past. so no i don't want it back, though a life sentence should mean that the person is in jail for the rest of his/her life, and when i mean jail i mean a 6ft by 4ft cell with a hole in the floor as a toilet.

Killing elements of our society, who have done something against the laws of our society is like taking a painpill. The pain will go away for a short time, but the disease remains. If our society isn´t able to deal (as in detect and prevent) things like this from happening, then it´s just a symptom of us being part of the problem, not part of the solution.
The paedophilia example is a pretty good one. Did you know that a significantly high percentage of paedophils have been victims of child abuse themselves when they were kids?
Death penalty has three columns to rest on: deterrence, revenge and prevention. You don´t need to kill someon to prevent him from doing something wrong. You can lock him away. The deterrence debate should be a dull blade by now, take a look at the link I posted in the other Saddam thread. Well... so now we´ve got revenge as the last motivation. I honestly don´t believe that this is something to be proud of. If someone takes my candy, I can demand it back (or a equivalent good). But killing someone doesn´t give us back a life, or in other words: you can´t equalize a "wrong" by doing another "wrong".

The death penalty isn't a deterrent because most people who commit serious crimes either: A) Aren't fully in control of themselves at the time (crimes of passion etc) or B) don't believe they will get caught (most criminals don't actually believe that they will be called to account for their crimes).

It isn't a cheaper solution than life imprisonment either. In the US for example many 'death row' prisoners are spending their whole lives in prison until they die of old age. Meanwhile they are racking up huge costs to the justice system for their constant appeals and the ultra security prisons that they have to be kept in.

Finally in all civilised countries, you are innocent until proven guilty and you almost always have the right of appeal. It's hard to appeal when you're dead....

people wouldnt want death penalty if the prison was actually like a prison.

these days a prison is better for the people that go in it is for them outside.

free tv, free food, free games.

no, the next lower sentence is life, meaning 80years+, honestly if your 40 when you commit murder that means you'll be 120 when you get out... witch would be more painful?

unless they take away the humain aspect of things... like amputating your limbs and left for dead, or you were skin'd or something painfull... leathel injection is stupid, and only used to free up prison space's, probobbly

personally, if i got death for a crime i would be happier than if i got life meaning life

No, I'll always be against the death penalty, even if rapists deserve to get their balls chopped off with a rusty kitchen knife. But you might always catch a wrong one, so permanent harm is a big no.

Imho jails should be changed though, from carebare-land to real jail, where the prisoners do something to repay all the shit they've done to the public. Could use them as cheap workers to repair roads or similar stuff that benefits the state as whole.

Yes bring it back, that way my Tax money can actually be spent on something useful other then making prison life luxurious (sp!?)

There are certain crimes which should definately have the ability to sentance to death. Should be done case by case to deem if said crime should lead to death sentance but murders etc where the criminal shows no remorse for what they have done should definately get it. If they think that such a crime is fine then they got no place in our society.

There will always be underlaying factors. But at the moment people know that the punishment received will never equal the crime commited and so they really dont care about repercusions.

the priniciple argument here seems to be that prison is soft, so kill them instead..
surely if thats your justification you would rather the money spent on "improving" the prison system?
less reading the sun tbh

i said it before,
they should bring back hard labour, and introduce a reward scheme based on the ammount of work you do.
All prisoners could have the minimum, but "luxuries" such as tv etc should be earned through graft.
This way the prisoners
a) potentially can pay their own way
b) will have a little money when they get out (subsequently the money they earn can also be taken for what hey owe such as child support)

Why waste a rescource when you can exploit it?

concerning rape trials, what if the "victim" had made it all up?. it has happened on numerous occasions because at the moment current law favours the victim (so much for innocent until proven guilty), at the moment the case can be appealed. If you want to implement the death penalty it is game over even if you are innocent :p, this is just one example.
I agree on tougher penalties, i dont agree on the death penalty.

And I think any family who's lost a member because of a murderer would be outraged with your suggestion.

Labour = justification for killing people?

They even get luxuries from justifying the murdering of an innocent body?

If someone takes away the life of another person in the public, that someone should have as close to a standard of life as the person who has died. That would be death or a lifetime in a prison, where everything isn't fine and dandy.

If God treats us as all equal, who are we to take another person's life away and then eventually resume our normal standard of life? Equal to me means the same. If someone takes 'x' life, they should lose theirs too (in a general sense).

If you make decisions which should be made with a logical and distant manner with "emotional decisions" you have already made the wrong choice before you even open your mouth.
Your reply screams you have never done a hard days graft in your life (but then i dont expect you to, your only a kid), it is not "easy" by any means.
A life term of manual labour is a hell of alot more of a punishment than the easy way out, "death".
This also means that the prisoners family does not have to suffer/live off benefits as a result if the prisoners wage is given to them.

state and religion are seperate in the uk, one can never be used to justify the other. And quite rightly so

That aside your argument is also flawed, if the family were true christians they would have forgiven him/her for his/her sins and believe he/she will be punished accordingly when they die

tbh i dont think people would object so much to prison if life actually meant life but we all hear so often about some one who's killed/raped whatevered someone then been sentanced to 12 years and got out in 3.

That is true injustice imo for someone to pay what is in comparison to how they treated their victim a light sentance its almost worth going out and commiting these crimes because the punishment (and yes i do believe that prison should punish the criminals) is always so damn feeble.
