Router Problems!!!

Been having serious router(?) problems the past few weeks. I think its all connected with some problem I had with my router.. where it wouldn't even connect to the internet properly.. and my mom (t3h IT specialist in the house.. since I don't even know where to plug in the computer let alone fix a router) phoned AOL (provider) and someone else, and somehow fixed the router.. so we could connect to the internet again.

From then our computers have been having some problems :(. At first I noticed that Guild Wars didn't work (But DAoC did! yay), that I couldn't get past the 'Downloading' Screen when trying to install it, or even get around to logging in my character, on the computer where it had already been installed before all of this. I consulted the Guild War forums, and they told me to visit portforwarding.com, and to follow the instructions there. With some help from Valky.. I managed to do all what was said.. but it still didn't work (same problems as before).

Now I have noticed that I cannot connect to certain websites. I wanted to reinstall MSN, but found I couldn't connect to msn.co.uk. I also couldn't connect to aol.com. I tried to download MSN from download.com, but when trying to download, it just showed in the bottom of IE, that it was loading, but it never did load. I think this is somewhat linked, but I don't know how. I expect its some problem with the router, but neither me or my mom knows how to fix it.

So its in your hands!! Do any of you have any advice how to fix this, so I can get on Guild Wars, or even MSN again? :)

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Oh, and the microsoft update website doesn't work at all :(

reset the router, then set it back up from the default settings, all you SHOULD need to change is the connection details, after that, see if you can connect to anything, if you cant, OK should of asked this first, what router is it? :p

try to disable firewall @ both router and your computer

and in this IExplorer.. hit extra>internet options>security and click each icon (internet local zone and 2 others)
and set them all to Default (security level)

and for port mapping.
You dont need that for msn etc.. should work without it
---
and also reset your modem (could also try leaving the power cord unplugged for 5ish mins)

your modem should reload a new config file from the ISP (but i doubt thats the problem)

oh and.. try disableing the proxyserver in IExplorer
Extra>internet options>connections>LAN options/config.. (DO write the ip+port down .. incase everything stops working :p)

also check your DNS server @ router

To test DNS server(s)
try going to http://207.46.250.185 (also update.microsoft.com but now you connect directly to it without the need of a DNS server)

Yes reset it all then set it up again set your firewall to allow all outbound services and block all inbound services. And make sure all your ports are forworded ok.

Also check your logs you geting any blocked packets like DOS packets? which your firewall is detecting as DOS packets.

And change your ISP :worthy:

Probbly a built in modem and his router firewall is probbly detecting the packets as DOS and blocking them.

longshot solution inc.
run a spyware removal prog.
i was having similar probs a little while back and i went mental at my isp, reset my router, reset my modem then went mental at my isp again.
my provider told me to try a spyware remover and i said that i was using one regularly and that spyware couldnt be the cause.
my brother phoned me later that day and told me my spyware tool was a pice of shit and to try another.
downloaded and ran spybot search&destroy and hey presto my connection was fine and dandy again.
just a possibility for you to try.
