lucky git :/ cant physically wait to see it, been watching the trailer.. it looks painfully epic.

is it as good as the others? or better? or what? i've heard from some reviewers that they think its actually, if possible, better than the book..

Wow, thats cool! Really looking forward to seeing the Paths of the Dead and the purging of the Shire, if that's been left in.

Better than FOTR and TTT combined (only my opinion). The battle scenes redefine "epic." The film probably benchmarks that word for the next decade and beyond.

Purists wont be happy with the Saruman omissions (there's always the extended DVD to look forward to) but I would challenge even the most ardent LOTR fan not to leave the cinema feeling overwhelmed rather than shortchanged - PJ has kept faith in every other way with the book (within the context of a 3h 14m limitation) and I would concur that some scenes are "better than the book" if only in that the visuals are so mesmerising.

Bah! Since I first heard of the movies being filmed all I wanted to see was how they were going to handle the Purging of the Shire. Answer: They cut it. :(

The film isn't better than the book - but certain scenes in it have a refreshing magic - the Paths of the Dead is one such example which springs to mind. There are a whole host of others where people will find PJ and his crew have pulled out all the stops in their attention to detail, and its a tribute to the original book that it brought the best out of this production in so many ways too numerous to mention.

The Purging of the Shire just couldnt have been physically included and done justice to (assuming it would have run for at least 30 minutes) without detracting from the rest of the film in cinematic terms - the film runs for well over 3 hours as it is, and extending it further to satisfy the purist would have left the majority becoming increasingly aware of and irritated by their sore backsides.

What other fine detail would have had to have been sacrificied to keep the film at a reasonable length? I challenge any of the disgruntled to find 30 minutes of cuts in the final production to fit the purge in and then carry on with their disatisfaction. Besides, it was always an "After the Lord Mayor's Show" section in comparison with the apocalyptic events preceding it, which would have left the film concluding a bit low key.

The extended versions of the first two allowed time to include things that would have made them too long for cinema release - the same applies to the above in ROTK. I would respectfully suggest all the doubters enjoy the cinema version for what it unquestionably is - one of the greatest films of all time and an experience to be cherished.

The Purging of the Shire was the bit at the end where you thought it was over, and Frodo comes back and kicks some backside! Was one of the best parts to read in the book for me, and I think they could have used it to make people who don't know the book, belive it was over when it could really have one last stop.

And if its so epic, who's thinking of a sore bum? :p

You've obviously never seen the Godfather and read the awful piece of pulp fiction trash it was based upon.....
