I have to say that this views is as limited as 'vilent video games make killers'.

It's never that simple and the actresses in porn know what they are doing, what they got into etc. Especially the superstars, they are quite smart and have more business savvy then your average female.

Actually, if folk try to get past who he is and avoid the knee-jerk response some of what he is reported to say makes sense. He might not perhaps be the most eloquent person on the planet and have a somewhat ham-fisted delivery but there's an element of truth in what he says.

Children tend to be able to access violent games at a much younger age than porn and also parents need to take more care of what their children are able to access. As he says, don't blame other things on what is basically bad parenting.

My own gut feeling is that some lazy parents use video games and computers as baby-sitters, whereas in past decades they only had access to very regulated TV to do the same job. Please note I refer here to lazy parents, not attentive parents where usage is properly monitored. Because children will absorb the moral choices of those around them as they grow (that is after all how children learn - behaviour doesn't sprout fully formed from minds, it is inducted) *in theory* they could absorb the moral choices of computer games as normal. I think they'd have to grow up in a rather abnormal environment to do so but in theory I guess it could happen that someone becomes a gun toting maniac after playing the more violent games from a very young age and had very little proper social interaction with peers or family etc.

I'm fairly sure some of the outrage at his comments comes from the discomfort of having to examine their own beliefs on the subject, rather than him being a foaming anti-gamer.

You can't simply base whether a game is suitable for a child on age alone, you have to consider their mental makeup. Some will react harmlessly to games like GTA, some won't. Blanket saying 12 year olds aren't ready for GTA is plain wrong.

I'm reminded of the answer I gave in another thread about what game to buy a young boy starting on FPS games and the subsequent responses. TF2 is rated 15, but there are many people (myself included) who wouldn't have an issue with someone 12 or older playing it. The game is designed to be cartoonish and not taken seriously. The most extreme example is if you get gibbed by a rocket and the freezeframe shows little caption boxes with arrows pointing to "You're here" "And here" "And here" spread over an area.

Now here's the thing. I don't consider myself a negligent parent. I take heed of ratings on films because they're a good indication of what the content is going to be. I took my eldest daughter and her bestfriend to see New Moon at the cinema because the film is rated 12A, even though they're 10 years old. The film is AIMED at the teen female demographic.
I also took her to see Avatar because once again that is 12A. I know where her sensitivities lie and she knows that a film is "not real life". She does however get distressed when she sees unpleasant things on the news because she knows that's "real".

My original "WTF?" was based on someone who's made a career out of an industry that serves an adult purpose commenting on something far more mainstream. As a consumer of adult material myself, there's no way in HELL I'd have it accessible to my kids, even by accident. I've seen both sides of the coin and my belief is that "ordinary" porn is more corrupting to children than "violent" video games. "Extreme" porn doesn't even come into the discussion.

The final thing to remember is that you can only wrap your kids up in cotton wool for so long. Eventually they will go look for this sort of stuff online BECAUSE they've been prevented from seeing it. I've got blocks, filters and logs running on my eldest's netbook and I VNC on at random to see what she has on screen. It's the price she pays for using my internet connection and she agreed to it. I know one day I will see an attempt to visit a porn site in the filter logs... I'm just hoping it's later rather than sooner.

Porn actually has an R18 rating (Restricted 18).
Not just any old place can sell it. Only specially licenced premises can sell hardcore magazines, DVDs etc. Any old supermarket can sell 18 rated DVDs and games. The fact that porn shops have to be strictly licenced shows that the local Council considers porn "worse" than violent games.

Games can/are rated 18 but like porn you'll find most ignore these ratings, while it may hold some truth lets face facts it is like complaining about the Burj Khalifa being an eye sore and a complete environmental nightmare while standing on top of Taipei 101....it just doesn't sit to well.
