Guys I got this from cs.net forums, it does not affect me and most people i've talked to but here we go....
The new models are 512 *512 some gfx cards can handle this (vodoo 3 cant, tnt2 can) for some people HL defaults this setting to 256 textures which vodoo 3 and other cards can hadle, but does not look as good. To find out if you are running the good quality models type gl_max_size in your console if it says 256 then you need to do something, if it says 512 (and assuming your gfx card can do it) your fine.
Okay if you are getting 256, add the line gl_max_size "512" to you config.cfg or autoexec.cfg
BTW this will not affect your framerate as Hl always processes the 512 textures but for some people (again not everyone) will default to display only 256. Hopes this helps some people.
