He got off on the power trip from having the ability to control whether someone lived or died. Not the type of person I would like to have as my doctor. Whether the guards killed him or he commited suicide it is no big loss to society.

Incidently, I highly doubt that a sociopath like Shipman would kill himself because of guilt. He probably killed himself because he had hit a dead end. Solitary confinement, 24/7 and no chance of parole...he might as well kill himself because there was nothing else he could do.
