I'm sitting here completely bemused at the latest news regarding Infogrames dumping Microprose.

I'd love some more information if anyone can supply it, or preferably links regarding the matter : I just fail to see how a company can let go one the most talented bunch of games producers the UK has seen. Ok, you console kiddies had the well respectable Rare (even in the olden days they chucked out some wonderful old games).
Geoff Crammond is without a shadow of a doubt the most experienced, and best racing physician coding for any platform. No racing game has yet to *touch* upon the fine, fine balance of playability and simulation that Geoff and his team at Simergy/Microprose have hand drawn. Any time anyone comes even a smidgen too close to that line, Geoff goes out and draws a completely new one, 300 miles away and stands on it firmly. It even takes top producers 3 years to come up with something nearly as good as his last offering. (grand prix 3 is still a shitload better then that F12002 thing).
so why? I fail to see what has happened. Maybe Geoff and his team are asking too much, or Mr Crammond was caught in bed with Mrs Infogrames?

Someone enlighten me :| I'm damned sure someone else will save the day, Microprose won't go anywhere without a fight, but this is still bewildering never-the-less. :|

Microprose have been around since I was a lad.
I hope another publisher picks em up, or they go it alone, either way i think they would succeed.
Slap those capitalist pigs at Infrotard.

In the immortal words of Yoda:

"One title a publisher does not make"

It's only bewildering if you're dense. Microprose had one decent license - ol' Crammo's GP games, and they're pretty much only for afficiandos (read: hardly anyone)

In my neck of the woods chuffed means pleased or happy, and therefore I don't understand this thread at all. :/

Kryten is shitting his pants basically at the prospect of not having another F1 game to play next year, and the implied notion that he might actually have to go out and stop being a lamer.

:m00:

I would therefore have said, "Right browned orf," or maybe, "Slightly perturbed re Microprose."

I dunno.

What's in the next thread?

Microprose did F117A Stealth Fighter, I loved that game.

I've already given my alligence to F117A - Stealth Fighter in my news post on this subject.

As far as is known, the descion to close Microprose's last development studio was simply a financial one.

I think Durzel's reply says it all really.

bit odd really - round ere ya can use chuffed to mean happy, or chuffin as a 'polite' expletive.

Round here you can refer to someone driving too close behind you to being, "Right up my chuff!".

hmmm

And F117A Stealthfighter was a fantastic game on the Amiga, as was F15 Strike Eagle :D

Microprose was a superb outfit, with a number of winning games under its belt :-

Xcom, F1, Transport Tycoon, Thempe Park, Rollercoaster Tycoon, a number of flight sims etc

Just cause they hardly touch FPS or RTS you "gamers" dont want to know.

yea i know bullfrog was the main team behind them park, but i thought microprose had somethign to do with it? im likely to be wrong as im trying to remember the loading screen and cant :/

The "microprose website" is basically just infrogrames so i cant tell what they did or not :(

Bullfrog made Flood I believe, and therefore they 0wn all.

Didn't Bullfrog do Syndicate?

Now that was a game.

*nod viciously*

And prime1, I'm quite sure Microprose had nothing to do with Theme Park. I just google'd (whadda verb) "Theme Park" Microprose and all it spat out were references to Rollercoaster Tycoon and comparisons between "Microprose's RCT and Bullfrog's Theme Park". :)

Anyway, this has reminded me Simcity 4 and RCT2 are both in production, which is A Very Good Thing (TM).

SO have Geoff Crammond, Chris Sawyer (RCT) all just been left jobless and had their game licences swallowed up into Infogrammes where some half arsed console muppets can make watered down versions suitable for 6 year olds?

Microprose did 2 things:

1) F1 GP

2) "Tycoon" games (don't count them as separate just because they had different graphics)

Neither of which have mass market appeal.

So it's hardly surprising they got dumped really.

The Tycoon series didn't have mass appeal? Until The Sims came along, I thought every version of the Tycoon franchise was in the top 10 best seller list. Fun for all the family.

Yes... until The Sims came along. Lamers will be far too busy buying "Sim XPac #1463 - Apocalypse Sim" to get another one.

Plus when Transport Tycoon etc actually came out, it wasn't exactly difficult to get into the "top 10"
