revision techniques

i feel the usual method of reading everything the night before is no longer working as i get further into uni. what techniques do you all use?

im currently reading notes and condensing them down, though im not sure if im learning anything from it as of yet :/

Bullet point things you think you will need to know. Then revise on them.

Do a bit of revision on each day so you slowly drill it in

Ergh *rubs eyes* lol just finished reading over one of the sections I need for history.

My method is make a list of areas to revise (lists are good, lists are my friend) then take all the books and notes etc (i keep neatly filed for easy access) in to my bed so im not tempted to check msn or FH every 5 mins.

Read through the section i need, both from my college work book and the text books with a highlighter pen in my paw, mark down the bits of note but keep reading so as not to disrupt la flow.

then when done go through it all again and write down key points (usually chronologically) noting the date, who did what and what happened. then when everything is checked through, type them up using red ink or highlighter to pick out dates or items of significant importance.

Do this for all topics long before exams and then I have a nice neat set of notes that are easy to remember when in exam conditions.


its not just exams i do this for lol i was making lists and itineraries for our holiday last night i got it down to a fine art tbh.

Pretty much what Bahu said, usually the best bet. Revising on the DAY of the exam DOES NOT help. You end up forgetting other stuff. =<

When I was at uni I started revising a week before the exam (it usually takes me 3/4 days for me to get to a point where I can confidently sit the exam) and then just cram like fucking mad. I pretty much summarise all my notes and write them out, and then when I'm done I read through them a couple of times.

And if theres anything I don't remember too well I write it out again and again until its drilled into my head.

I tend to do the writting out thing when its like formulas and definitions and stuff. Oh and I know its hard, but dont get drunk, else you wont be able to revise the day after and you forget what you've learnt I did this quite alot unfortunately but I managed to control myself in the third year.

What me and my mates did at Uni was nothing from Sept to May. Then in the month before the exams we got together and worked like f**k for a few weeks around the exams. Everything was fresh in our minds then, and 5-6 brains on the job are better than one. I learned an entire subject in 2 evenings and got a B in the exam this way

Writing as many notes on your body to take into the exam with you also helps.

I can't revise, easily distracted and stubborn when it bores me. Thankfully I have innate ability in my field so I tend to do well. Therefore my suggestion is not to revise, just fucking vise properly the first time you cover the material!

I tend to do full notes on a subject
then compact these into smaller points, 1 or 2 sentence bullet points.
Then further break it down into single sentence/word points
And repeat the process until i am down to single word's to learn as triggers for my memory

i pointed out that he could turn the phone off.


seriously one of the best ways to revise is go to a room where there is no distractions and you can just concentrate, then you go somewhere else when you take a break, it really helps me to focus.
