returnin 2 quake 2

hi ppl
ive returned 2 q2 tonight after a years abscence, thought id install it again and start playing again online. ive installed it and got the latest 3.2 patch and i know this questions ben answered a million times but i just cant remember how i configured my 56k modem because at the moment im getting 1000+ pings. I had this last time but i cant remember how i fixed it. the only thing i have done so far is to change the rate to 5000 from 25000.
Another thing thats gone pear shaped is my sound its gone all choppy. How can i fix this?
Please help me i miss my q2! Thanks in advance and sorry to be a pain in the arse askin all these n00bie questions :0

.i would think 5000 rate is a bit high for a modem,try 4000? capping your frame rate may well help,the command is
cl_max fps xx
also the fix for sound is set s_mixahead ".4"
if the pic is dark cos u have a nvidea card,adjust the gamma to about 1.25 on ur card before going in game.
