On a related musical note, did anyone see that "Ultimate Chart" on C4 featuring all the 100 best selling UK singles ever ?

Full of interesting factoids, I didn't know Mike Batt (Wombles) wrote "Bright Eyes" (Watership Down bunny film). Also worthy of note was how many "successful" artists never made it into the top 100; Abba, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, David Bowie, and Elton John was only there by virtue of that awful Diana song.

The number of early Beatles dominating the charts surprised me, very few modern songs apart from the overhyped and Xmas crap (Celine Dion,Garath Gates and Bob the Builder) crack the 1 million sales mark, it just goes to show that the industry has been in decline for ages, not a recent phenomena caused by file swapping.

And the amount of "covers" making the sales, a massive portion were songs ripped off from elsewhere, either direct covers (Unchained Melody), rewites (Gangsta Paradise) or sampled stuff.

It has always been said the record companies would strike gold by putting their deleted songs online and charging a silly low fee (like 5p per download or 50p per album).

Singles chart is just dominated by 11 year old girls' latest fads. Which is in turn dominated by what the record companies are pushing this week.

Singles == teh sux.
