Windows remote desktop uses port 3389 but it depends on what equipment you have, and what firewalls/NAT are between your two computers to come up with any help.

You may have to punch holes in firewalls, add forwarding to routers and all sorts of strange things.

You really shouldn't do that. It means people can connect to your home pc from outside the world with remote desktop. Although they have to submit a password, I wouldn't trust microsoft to have a decent security on that system.

If you can configure zone alarm to only allow the RDP port to a specific IP address then it is secure. Not sure if this is possible tho.... but it is with IPTABLES :)

As Tears mentioned, add the ip for the computer you are connecting
from to Trusted Zone. I used to do that when I connected to my home
pc from school. Problem was that I had to use the same computer
all the time I wanted to connect (Didn't want to add more then 1).

one more question!!!

atm my home and laptop Ips are the same exept the last nr is different..

(PC has 1 in the end and laptop has 3(my bro has 2 and sister 4...and so on))

if i connect from my unis wifi connection does my IP change or will it stay the same??( i havent checked that myself). i have IP on optain automatically.

so if it changes i cant just put one IP in the trusted zone on zone alarm...

PS soo far you guys have been really helpful....TY

EDIT: just found out that my internet connectiod doesnt have a static IP, evry time i make a new connection, i get a new IP :p but thats not really a big prob couse most of the time the comp is online and i rarely disconnect and the reconnect

Well what you say about your IP sounds like just your internet sub ip in the network.

For example, my router forwards packets to each of my PCs on my network. I have 3 PCs, and they are all assigned an IP like 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2 etc.

If your pc at home is on a network like this, then you would need to get those ports forwarded to the correct PC as well.

Unfortunatly I have never really used remote Desktop so my advice is pretty limited :)
I prefer to setup a Linux machine with samba, but Remote Desktop does have other advantages.
