Wonder what happened if you named a teddybear 'Jesus Christ' back when Britain/England was in the same religious stage as these coutries.

The Gallows, anyone? :)

As long as those depraved values don't spread to Europe...oh wait, they already have. Yet another reason to put barbed wire around the borders of Europe.

I'd like to stuff barbed wire in your ass.

I am pretty sure that i saw a report on TV with one of her fellow teachers at the same school and they were telling the reporter that they warned her about the potential for problems naming the teddy would have.

You know i would never had stayed in England as long as i did if i thought that the skin heads were the main stream of the English people. I have been exceptionally lucky in that i have had the pleasure of meeting many great people while living in the UK.

I dont go around judging a entire country /race of people off the behaviour of what i would call the mindless minority.

Mey, I wasnt referring to myself, I was quoting what was said to me, perhaps I didnt articulate that well enough?

Like I said Tasslehoff, a very vocal minority. I'm not saying everyone agrees with me, or even a majority; half the people probably couldnt care less, but its not like everyone disagrees like Tierk implied. I guess I left myself wide open for someone to come in and say what you said eh? :p

Tierk you've done what I really hoped you wouldnt do and have picked my thread apart. Like I said before, I'm not going to answer you in kind - I will give as comprehensive a reply as I can.

I referred to the 300 thread because I seem to remember it starting in practically the same way as it has here. You quoted me and I quoted you back, on and on, we picked eachother's posts apart and neither of us got anywhere. You started making similar noises in another thread as well as this one, hence my comment about you following me around.

Considering you regard me as a halfwit who is below you and therefore beyond interest, you seem more eager to reply than I'd imagine.

We have vastly differing opinions. I dont honestly think you're full of shit as you seem to think of me. You debate well and generally get your meaning across - despite being pedantic and stubborn, as I said before - but just because I strongly disagree with you doesnt mean I feel the need to hurl abuse.

I get things wrong sometimes, as you so eloquently highlighted in the other thread, however generally I have sources to back up what I say, I dont actually just post bullshit without rhyme or reason. I'm not a skinhead, nor a neo-nazi or perhaps as bigoted as you seem to think. I have strong views about islam as you well know, and this is a product of what I see and read via the media, and from my own experiences of such things in real life - an informed opinion of sorts, rather than blind prejudice. Maybe I dont have as broad an experience of islam as you have, and perhaps, perhaps my mindset is wrong - I can accept that possibility.

That said, you are subject to exactly the same things, you seem to think of me, my opinion and my mindset with a similar sort of "bigotry" that you have, in the past, accused me of. You hate and abuse without really knowing.

Like I said, I do not want to descend into another pointless slagging match from which no good will come, I feel that the best ending to this would be for us to beable to respect each others position on this, even if we cant agree - rather than just "spouting shit" and hurling insults.

I left myself wide open for someone to come in and say what you said eh? :p
.
I think its more the fact you make big sweeping statements with nothing to back them up,
prime example:
"they already get away with quite a bit when it comes to minor things"
Yet you dont give any example of these "minor things" i have yet to see "them" get away with anything illegal in fact there is a vast volume of information on the contrary, just one example:
BBC NEWS | UK | Race hate cleric Faisal deported

You will find many of the people who agree with your more extreme views are the same morons that lap up Rupert Murdoch's bullshit like below

pisses me off so much the way you get muslims come over to the UK (i dont have anything against them for their beliefs btw) an they can build mosque's....reckon ya could go to pakistan or any islamic country an build a church? fuckin double standards.

I agree with what he's saying, i know what he's saying. So personally i think its true.

As long as those depraved values don't spread to Europe...oh wait, they already have. Yet another reason to put barbed wire around the borders of Europe.

Subsequently the reason i gave up on this thread as there is no changing their skewed one-sided views so i figured this thread would steadily go downhill. Fortunately there seems to be some hope for it;
No doubt i made a few enemies with this post, but quite frankly i dont care. I cannot stand people with such ignorant, intolerant and bigoted views

if you think in the year 2007, that it's perfectly fine and normal, no matter what country, to imprison a very hard working and great teacher (as reports say) for 15 days, for such a thing as having the children in her class name a bear mohammed... then there's something seriously wrong. what dukat and other peoples points are, it CLEARLY wasn't meant with such intent to cause offence, that can surely be agreed by everyone, didn't the kids decide on the name? it's so stupid. to put a good person in jail for that, go go dark age justice

way to over simplify a religion, eejit
having the name written down in itself is highly offensive, so, yeah calling a bear after him is kinda bad. It may be a shit way to carry on, but its how they live, so dont denigrate them cos of that

oh, and if she was living out there teaching, how can she be that stupid as to think she would get away with it ?

Over simplified it yourself as well. If even writing the name Mohammed is offensive then why is half the gulf, North Africa and Pakistan called Mohammed. Also, she did not actually name the bear, the children did. They were asked to pick their favourite name.

As for the crack about why is she even there, she's probably there because she wants to do some good. Educating the children of Africa is probably one of the best things she could do given the talents she has. At least she cares enough to do it given the risks.

I dont think that the two things are related in anyway to be honest. The problems in Dafur are internal problems of Sudan, just in the same way that the troubles in Norther Ireland where a problem for the Uk government and not one for the UN to get involved in.

On a personal level i dont think that it was a intentional action from the woman in question. Turning it into a international incident is not going to be doing her any favours at all as it will force the Sudanese governments hand so as to appear to be tough on all people esp after all the problems with the Cartoons.

So the world should turn a blind eye to the attrocities on civillians in Dafur, wonder why? Maybe because it shows Muslim religion in a bad light. How the hell can you compare entire villages being wiped out with what happened in Northern Ireland. That's probably the worst analogy I've ever heard for the Dafur issue. The biggest problem is it was ignored for years as an internal issue. The the African nations tried to sort it but couldn't agree on who was going to supply what. Finally the UN steps in because the media campaign has heated up.

If the Sudanese Government take a hard line on this they will end up the loosers as aid will be cut but the western nations.

With the greatest respect mate but you really do go on and on and on. What is it exactly that Muslims get away with in England? I have spent thirty two years in England and trying to fit into society as much as possible. Now every time i have been on the receiving end of racial abuse, be it from a policeman down to the mindless skin heads we had to put up with for years and years (as it was the cool thing to be at one time) i have put it down to the fact that there are always small minded morons out there that will do, say whatever they feel like because they have limited education /upbringing.
You have over a series of threads on these forums just gone on and one about how crap Muslims are in your opinion and how foriegners are runing your country. Give us all a rest.

So why on earth should anyone listen to the UK when British subjects are in jail facing serious crimes and the government of the day is trying to get them released?

Although I agree to the sentiment that you have to abide by the laws of the country you live in. Sometimes the punishment is way too harsh, why shouldn't we complain. Or maybe we should reciprocate with similar laws against foreign national from those same countries. Wonder how that would go down?

tierk said:
You might think the laws suck, you might think that it is ok to call a teddy bear Mohammad, hell you might think it is ok to bumfuck you boyfriend in a park in front of twenty people with their families but insome countries this is not considered ok and you must abide by the laws of the land you live in. Ignorance of the law is no defense against the law.

The problem with Sharia and the interpretations of the Koran regarding law is that they were written so long ago and have not moved on. Although society has generally moved on and become more enlightened and educated the laws (punishments) remain the same. From time to time stupid things like this happen. According the law she can be stoned for what she did.

Muslims are activly campaigning for Sharia law to be recognised in the UK. Yet recent polls show only 40% British Muslims even want it. For muslim holidays to be recognised etc. When they don't get their way our country is accussed of being rascist. Maybe we should bring back some of Europes old medievil laws and tell the rest of the world to go f*ck themselves.

The rascism you have seen in the UK I have also seen against westerners (myself included) in Saudi, Pakistan, Oman and Yemen. Being spat at by Arabs is no fun especially when they know you cannot touch them. If you do your in Jail and completely screwed. The Saudi Police, Customs and Mutaween (religious police) are some of the most rascist people I have ever come across. They way they treat westerners is appalling and would not be tollerated in UK.

I once walked my team out of a job in Yemen until a Senior Manager had apologised in writing for personal rascist comments he made against two of my team. It cost them over 60k USD per day as the plane could not fly until we were finished. Nice to get one over the them.

There are a lot of parallels in todays Islam with Christianity 500-1000 years ago. Countless people got killed off for going against the church but eventually Christianity lost its grip on society, eventually Islam will too.
I am not saying people will stop worshiping but they will be educated enough to know that it should not be taken quite to literally and there is more to life than a book.

Agree with Platin...can you honestly tell me that a Church would be able to sustain itself for a week in an Islamic country? As if.

Quite a few do...

Even in places like Iraq, true Muslims tolerate other religions its only the brainwashed fanatics that don't.

.........Tierk you've done what I really hoped you wouldnt do and have picked my thread apart. Like I said before, I'm not going to answer you in kind - I will give as comprehensive a reply as I can.....

This is the normal way that people carry out discussions. You make points and i try and answer them or vice versa. You might find the task a bit daunting but regardless of that it is the way a discussion takes shape.

.........I referred to the 300 thread because I seem to remember it starting in practically the same way as it has here. You quoted me and I quoted you back, on and on, we picked eachother's posts apart and neither of us got anywhere. You started making similar noises in another thread as well as this one, hence my comment about you following me around..........

Just a small point, i didnt start to quote you but rather you quoted me and implied that my opinion was based on some kind of political correctness issues. I took exception to your comments and i think the thread went down hill pretty fast after that.

.........Considering you regard me as a halfwit who is below you and therefore beyond interest, you seem more eager to reply than I'd imagine. ..........

At no point do i say that i consider myself above you and the halfwit comment was a response to your constant snide remarks about muslims. I dont comment on things like.......

Fuck it, this is the excuse we've been waiting for, lets retake the sudan! :england:

I take them in the a light hearted manner that i assume it was said in. Even stuff like this.......

But when you make serrious genralisations about muslims i take exception to it. Muslims are not getting away with anything in the UK today just like every other minority today. The law applies to everyone the same, yes sometimes it might appear to be that muslims get away with blue murder but then that applies to all sides of the community regardless of race or religion.

.........We have vastly differing opinions. I dont honestly think you're full of shit as you seem to think of me.........

You are right we do have vastly different opinions about a wide range of subjects and i dont deny you your right to express yourself and your thoughts but what i dont expect to see or hear is snide insinuations about a group or segment of society that is already being victimised /marginalised.

.........You debate well and generally get your meaning across - despite being pedantic and stubborn, as I said before - but just because I strongly disagree with you doesnt mean I feel the need to hurl abuse..... .

My apologies for being rude and abusive.

My intention is not to imply that you are a skin head or anything like that but to try and make the point that you cannot make a judgement about a entire culture, race or relgion on the basis of the stupid actions of a very small minority.

.........I have strong views about islam as you well know.......

Yes and that is something that you make very clear, along with many other people. I dont deny you this right.

.........That said, you are subject to exactly the same things, you seem to think of me, my opinion and my mindset with a similar sort of "bigotry" that you have, in the past, accused me of. .......

I dont advocate bombings, terrorism, invasions or occupations. I believe in the free exchange of ideas but at the same time i believe that people should be held responsible for their words and actions. You shouldnt be allowed to speak or write stuff that is directly designed to cuase offense to one or other particular racial /religious groups.

Just in the same way that i cant stand for people to make derogatory remarks about muslims i also dislike it about anyone. I have on many oocasions got into a war of words here in Qatar with relatives that bad mouth English /western people.

.........You hate and abuse without really knowing........

Please show me one example where i have shown hatred.

.........Like I said, I do not want to descend into another pointless slagging match from which no good will come, I feel that the best ending to this would be for us to beable to respect each others position on this, even if we cant agree - rather than just "spouting shit" and hurling insults.

I dont understand where you get your views about muslims. I just wonder just how many muslims you have had as friends? I dont mean the guy in the shop where you buy your paper from either. You will find that they are no different to you in their day to day lives. Dont hold up the worst examples of muslims as if they are the majority.

You been away on holiday? I have been waiting for you on this thread for a while now!! :D

.....Maybe because it shows Muslim religion in a bad light. How the hell can you compare entire villages being wiped out with what happened in Northern Ireland........

Regardless of the differences in the scope of the carnage between Darfur or N Ireland, they are both internal matters. If the UN decides to get involved then so be it that is the purpose of having a body such as the UN.

.....If the Sudanese Government take a hard line on this they will end up the loosers as aid will be cut but the western nations.

They probably wont cut aid because now they have a vested interest, namely oil in the south of Sudan.

Although I agree to the sentiment that you have to abide by the laws of the country you live in. Sometimes the punishment is way too harsh, why shouldn't we complain......

Look i dont dispute that the punishment sometimes doesnt fit the crime, however, if you go to a foriegn country and live their then you must surely expect to live by the rules of that country.

......Or maybe we should reciprocate with similar laws against foreign national from those same countries. Wonder how that would go down?.....

Sorry this just doesnt make any sense to me. Sharia laws have not been put in place to single out foriengers but rather apply to every person living in countries that have these laws. Its not discrimanatory just against English or American people.

If the British government made laws that were designed to single out foriegners then i think there would be a outcry and rightly so. These laws are not racially motivated or aimed at one nationality.

...........The problem with Sharia and the interpretations of the Koran regarding law is that they were written so long ago and have not moved on. Although society has generally moved on and become more enlightened and educated the laws (punishments) remain the same. From time to time stupid things like this happen. According the law she can be stoned for what she did........

Was she sentenceed to be stoned? 15 days considering what would have happened to a muslim is in my book a let off. The government must be seen to do something (Sudanese government) and the more of a fuss that is kicked up the heavier the punishment was going to get.

.....For muslim holidays to be recognised etc. When they don't get their way our country is accused of being rascist. Maybe we should bring back some of Europes old medievil laws and tell the rest of the world to go f*ck themselves.........

You talk about muslims in the UK as if they are from another planet. These are British citizens, the vaste majority of whom are born in the UK and have lived in Britain all there lives. Now i am not advocating that Sharia law should be brought into Britian far from it.

I dont see what the problem is with letting muslims also have their religious festivals etc. I was very lucky in that most places i have worked at were very easy and flexible about religious holidays. For example i was allowed to work different hours to the rest of the people when i was fasting. I dont believe that this requires legislation as common sense should prevail at all times.

.....The rascism you have seen in the UK I have also seen against westerners (myself included) in Saudi, Pakistan, Oman and Yemen. Being spat at by Arabs is no fun especially when they know you cannot touch them. If you do your in Jail and completely screwed. The Saudi Police, Customs and Mutaween (religious police) are some of the most rascist people I have ever come across. They way they treat westerners is appalling and would not be tollerated in UK..........

My point with the skin heads was not to say that it only happens in England. It should be clear to everyone that there are always a vocal minority who will always do stuff that is deemed unacceptable to the rest of society. This is true in Muslim countries as well as western, in fact every country has them. You cannot judge a entire race, culture /religion on the actions or behaviour of a small minority.

I have been the subject of racism here in Qatar but i dont allow that to color my outlook on the way i am treated by a vaste majority of people on a daily basis.

This is the normal way that people carry out discussions. You make points and i try and answer them or vice versa. You might find the task a bit daunting but regardless of that it is the way a discussion takes shape.

Not so much daunting as tiresome - it seems to take longer, you dont tend to get the answers in context in my experience and it seems to me that points can come across wrong.

Just a small point, i didnt start to quote you but rather you quoted me and implied that my opinion was based on some kind of political correctness issues. I took exception to your comments and i think the thread went down hill pretty fast after that.

Fair enough, I may well have been the one to draw firstblood.

At no point do i say that i consider myself above you and the halfwit comment was a response to your constant snide remarks about muslims. I dont comment on things like.......

When I made the comment about getting away with "minor things" I perhaps should've given examples, the main example I had in mind when making the statement was about dresscodes in schools - until the government ban came into place from the house of lords the ban couldnt be enforced without schools being sued for 'breaches of human rights' and so on. Like I said though this is fairly minor, and has since been resolved, but it did take a high court ruling for it to happen.

You are right we do have vastly different opinions about a wide range of subjects and i dont deny you your right to express yourself and your thoughts but what i dont expect to see or hear is snide insinuations about a group or segment of society that is already being victimised /marginalised.

Fair enough - Its hard to resist making snide comments when you are continually faced with news storys of things like the one I quoted from the BBC. Having massive crowds 10 thousand strong burning pictures and demanding someone be shot for a rather ridiculous misinterpretation is enough to make my blood boil. Perhaps I shouldnt get so angry by it but its something that has always annoyed me.

I was trying to show that in a half tongue-in-cheek way, I don't really think nuking the sudan is a good idea. I do actually find the idea killing people rather nasty, but this is one of the reasons I was so annoyed in the first place - to have people on the streets in thier thousands demanding someone be killed - especially for something not particularly deserving - is abhorent to me, I felt exactly the same way when I heard about the girl in the middle east (iran i think) who was going to be executed for being raped, I actually signed a petition trying to stop it.

I find the mob-rule mentality particularly frustrating, especially when it is triggered by something stupid like the naming of a teddy bear.

I agreed with your sentiments completely on the other thread, just found it funny that you failed to even read the article in question esp as you are the thread starter.

I actually did laugh when I realised as well, I did read the article, I just got the impression it was his own house - the articles title on the page I read was "Shooting of burglars in Texas draws debate", rereading the thing there are actually only two references to the fact that the guy was defending his neighbours house and not his.

I dont quite know how I managed it but to be fair the main body of the text is fairly vague about what actually happened, the fact that the sound of the guy shouting and loading his gun was picked up by the phone made me automatically think this had all taken place inside the guy's house.

It was kinda funny but having it highlighted in an angry manner automatically put me on the defensive.

My intention is not to imply that you are a skin head or anything like that but to try and make the point that you cannot make a judgement about a entire culture, race or relgion on the basis of the stupid actions of a very small minority.

The problem is for me is that it doesnt seem to be a minority - 10 thousand in Sudan, and that was only those who bothered to turn up, similar episodes with the dutch comics brought even more violence, I seem to remember an embassy was set on fire, it just strikes me as quite a significant portion of muslims with this sort of mentality.

Yes and that is something that you make very clear, along with many other people. I dont deny you this right.

I agree about responsibility, what I wrote however was not so much meant to cause offense to people as it was to show my reaction to it. The reason for this is that I really dont see anyone here as being in the same group as the people I was referring to. I was perhaps careless as there is every chance there are muslims within the OT community, but most of the stuff directed at the Sudan wasnt particularly meant to be read by them. On the other hand, on some level I am very angry at these people because of thier reactions, from what I have read the protest (some would call it a riot) had to have been authorised by Sudanese officials on some level (source). It just strikes me as completely unnecessary and childish behaviour.

Just in the same way that i cant stand for people to make derogatory remarks about muslims i also dislike it about anyone. I have on many oocasions got into a war of words here in Qatar with relatives that bad mouth English /western people.

I have to admit that shows a rather large amount of levelheadedness on your part.

Please show me one example where i have shown hatred.

I dont want this to turn into a slagging match as I have said, I know you have your reasons for posting what you did, just as I had mine. I freely admit that you havent shown as much hatred as I have directed towards the sudanese/muslims in general in some of my posts. I will show you three examples of what I meant when I said that, just to show that I do try to make sure what I say is properly substantiated.

You are a fucking idiot then...
...as i said on other threads i think you are full of shit...
...i couldnt be arsed to get into another flame war with a half wit like you...

I'm not particularly bothered by the insults, I just wanted to show what I meant.

I dont understand where you get your views about muslims. I just wonder just how many muslims you have had as friends? I dont mean the guy in the shop where you buy your paper from either. You will find that they are no different to you in their day to day lives. Dont hold up the worst examples of muslims as if they are the majority.

I believe I have known three muslim people well enough to call them friends. One was on the same college course as me, the other two ran/worked in the local shop I went to twice or more a day. I never really talked to them about religion, the only time religion really came up was when hotdogs were taken off of the menu when one of the two took over as manager of the shop, even then there wasnt much religious talk per se.

I agree that they were practically indentical to me in everyday life, I dont see all muslims as the machete waving masses who turned out in the sudan, I do see a significant number of muslims as being like this though.

I know there are extremists in every walk of life, but to see ten thousand of them, or however many turned out to riot over the comic fiasco, and even more so when you hear of muslims who are living in the uk campaigning to get pork taken off of school menus and pig storys/references taken out of lessons (no direct sourcing for these two claims but I did read about it on the BBC site a while back).

I am sorry for once again picking apart your comments, i know that you dont like it but you make a lot of points and i feel that they should be answered.

Like I said, its not so much that, as I was concerned that answering you like that before would come off as more angry/antagonising than intended and could result in a slagging match that doesnt get anywhere, hopefully we're not in danger of that anymore though :)

You been away on holiday? I have been waiting for you on this thread for a while now!!

No just too busy with work right now.:( Did not even get time to go through this thread and read up the latest before another meeting kicks off in Emirates.

Not got time now either to answer properly. Glad it turned out well, anything would have been a tragedy.

Not so much.....

Well it all seems have turned out nicely in the end, thankfully and in the way that Mey stated  (you happy now??).

I spend a great deal of time posting across a few forums under different names, check this place out and read some of the comments that are posted by readers...........

alJazeera Magazine - Iraq has only “militants“, no civilians

FH is very civilised in comparsion to some of the things posted on that site. Read the comments at the bottom and you will see some real bottom feeders.

PS This site is nothing to do with the Al Jaz news channel, at least i dont think it is anyway.

if you think in the year 2007, that it's perfectly fine and normal, no matter what country, to imprison a very hard working and great teacher (as reports say) for 15 days, for such a thing as having the children in her class name a bear mohammed... then there's something seriously wrong. what dukat and other peoples points are, it CLEARLY wasn't meant with such intent to cause offence, that can surely be agreed by everyone, didn't the kids decide on the name? it's so stupid. to put a good person in jail for that, go go dark age justice

If you think Islam is in the same religious stage as christianity then there certainly is something wrong. Feel free to go on and shake your fist a them for that.

But do never forget what your country and your religion did back then.

I hope you do see the connection.

This sounds just like Spain during the Dark Ages... I hope enlightement will come to those countries some day too

Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise....
Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope....
Our four...no... Amongst our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise....
Doh!

Back on topic, even if it sounds harsh, religion is making Middle East countries stuck into and underdeveloped state compared with western countries. And nothing adds more fuel to the fire than economy problems...

PS: I'd like to play devil's advocate and state that during the Dark Ages, Spain was not the only country with Inquisition, in fact that organization was found in Italy n quickly spreaded throu France, Spain, Germany kingdoms, and England (tho ppl like Torquemada took it to the most bizarre extrems indeed).

Seriously, how fucked up are you?

How can you justify this by relating to actions done by christians 400-1000 years ago(depending on country)? Should we back down on our moral principles out of guilt?

If you think Islam was a more pleasant religion then christianity before, then you should look up the conquest of the lands in modern India and Pakistan by muslim warlords. For example: historians believe that up to a million hindus or more were murdered (not killed in battle) when Islam expanded into Asia with their "convert or die" policy. But has anyone criticised or judged Islam for that? No, yet christianity is constantly judged by its past to justify the ways of modern Islam, it's friggin rediculous.
