way to over simplify a religion, eejit
having the name written down in itself is highly offensive, so, yeah calling a bear after him is kinda bad. It may be a shit way to carry on, but its how they live, so dont denigrate them cos of that

oh, and if she was living out there teaching, how can she be that stupid as to think she would get away with it ?

Don't they name half their kids Muhammad? And most of those boys are alot fuglier than teddybears.
Wonder if they'd go apeshit at someone naming an ugly ginger kid Muhammad. You know.. since red is the color of blood. Women bleed during their periods... ergo. They just called the prophet, menstrual leakage!!!

On the other hand, they are in an islamic country, under islamic law. So they are in their right to uphold said law. I can still find it silly though :p

The classroom was in Sudan, an Islamic country. She's broken the law of the land, and if you live in a land you tend to be bound by the law. You'd have to have lived under a rock for the last 5 years not to know that Islamic states see the use of Mohammad's name as a crime (in most ways, I'm not sure how people are allowed to name themselves Mohammad and have no repercussions!)

Yes, its not a crime in our eyes, but we don't run their country. I dont see how this is religion's fault. She chose to live in that culture...

she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Looks like she just agreed with the kids.

I blame the parents :p

Well just wanted to offer the old argument:

"If they live in my country, shouldn't they live by OUR rules damnit!"

Which comes up in every "immigrant" discussion...ergo...shouldn't you respect their laws? :p

Just a note tho, she wasnt procecuted for naming the bear she was procecuted for putting up a poster with the bear named, it was regarded as offensive etc etc etc..
A bit like proclaiming Hitler the leader of Israel :p

The arrogance of people in this thread is laughable, if you proclaimed yourself a nazi in germany and went around parading the benefits of the holocaust (regardless of whether there were or weren't any) you can be arrested
LETS INVADE GERMANY RAAAAAHHHH

You know...... they should follow our rules. Our rules are better. Clearly.

And uh... that nazi example was just horrible :p

Why must we always go trough this pc crap when we get these news? Yeah we all know its not all muslims that agree with it, just these particular muslims. You dont have any problem saying that ALL americans are dumb for voting Bush. Its not islamophobic to say that this is fucking ridiculous. If it were american christians you wouldnt have any problem callem them stupid.

Rapists walking the streets, Muderers free'd after 6 months, Paedophiles allowed to work in schools, criminals having a better live in prison than the average person on the lower end of the wage scale, stabbing someone in broad daylight on camera and getting away with it... etc.. etc..
Yeah we are clearly better off
Dont be such a cretin, there are advantages and disadvantages to every judicial system the FACT of the matter is she broke the law, and is being held accountable, end of

Do you even read posts, or just see the word muslim or religion and use it as an excuse to whine about completely irrelevant topics?
I am guessing the latter as the above is not relevant or wanted as all you will now do in your subsequent posts is try derail the discussion.
Quite frankly its getting boring

Although i agree that the judicial system if too leniant.
A system, or ruleset that sentence a woman to 200 lashes and six months in prison after being gang raped... is obviously barbaric. And you can't blame people, despite the less than perfect crime records here, for favouring our way, that may not punish the guilty hard enough, but we do only punish "true" criminals. (I ofc know that innocent people have been convicted. But i believe my point here is obvious)

But like i said in my first post.
This case happened in an islamic country. Not in europe. They have strict religious laws, which they are welcome to follow in their own country. And although i find it horrible, i don't want to impose my rules on them in their own land. Just as i want them to keep the fuck away from the laws we use in our respective countries.
Like i voiced during the Muhammad drawings thing. This is Denmark, drawing him here is not a crime, so stop demanding we cut their heads off. I can't then be a hypocrite and demand they stop using their barbaric medieval laws (see how effortlessly i did that, *capow* :p)
Sudan and Saudi Arabia has Sudanese and Saudi Arabian laws. We don't have to like it, and we can voice whatever outrage we might have. But trying to change them by threats or force, is wrong.

I know, i was just illustrating a point :p
It's not a perfect system by any means but its better than most, but doesnt deviate from the fact as you say its the law of the land so it should be followed by people visiting there

but but they dont do it in England!

Well, even if they don't, if you expect them to do something, and use it as an argument when roles are reversed, use the same logic and argument here. Or...well..

Now what's the word i'm looking for...hypocrit?

Live by the law of the land. I believe it goes something along the lines of "Ignorance of the law is no defense against the law"

Was thinking the same...

Even though it is kind of ridiculous, but it's her choice to live there, she has to follow the rules. It's that simple, however ridiculous we find it.

Our justice system is hardly perfect. I know that. But neither is the sudanese law. Why cant i call it stupid without reminding everyone that ours is not perfect either? I dont know which one is better but in this particular area we are clearly more reasonable.

Right, i'm not to sure of the rules and banning stuff and shit here.

In my own opinion i personally think any kind of religion is a load of bollox. Sorry, i shouldn't exactly put it like that.

I don't care of anybodys religion or race, colour of the skin they should all be treated the same. Can be loads of arguements out there and stuff but its my own opinion.

From christianity to muslim.

If your a half muslim half seek you'd be treat the same as any christian or another religion from me, my friends and my family.

thats irrelvant, the point is that you are saying she is above the law of the land because she is british, if say Afghanistan made suicide bombings legal would it be ok ?
Ofc it wouldn't, the same applies here she is living and working in the country so should abide by the rules.
She is free to petition to have the rule changed, but that doesnt mean she can break it until it is.
The same way you will find people breaking laws in this country are procecuted, the punishments may not be to your satisfaction but when there is a case they are found guilty and dealt with accordingly.

Sudanese & British diplomatic relations have always been frosty. In the 1890s, the British sought to re-establish their control over Sudan, once more officially in the name of the Egyptian Khedive, but in actuality treating the country as British imperial territory.

You gotta be so careful what you say / do when you go to countries governed by Sharia law. A momentary lapse of attention, a slip of the tongue, a word said in supposed confidence here, a gesture there, and BANG, you're facing 40 lashes, stoning, or execution. Lets be honest here, Moslem fundamentalists are not known for their level-headedness. They see insults where none was intended.

I hope the teacher is released. Poor cow. But up against a charge of blasphemy of the prophet, I think she's going to lose this one.

At the moment i think she has a good chance if the judge is lenient she will just get a fine (if she cant afford the fine, 40 lashes), the problem is the press will make it an issue and the poor lady is going to ultimately pay for it, as the protests and such will start and turn it into another west vs east issue and escalate the issue where she may be given a prison sentence

I'd like to consider the idea that the bear was called Mohammed as a positive thing. Imagine young children being able to hug the bear, maybe talk to the bear as children are wont to do, maybe not seeing it as a representation of their prophet, but at least coming one step closer to their faith.

Agreed, but imagine the spanish, Portugese and South America cultures with people names Jesus - I reckon there's over a million of them. No Kidding.

I see your attempted irony in the second paragraph, but suggesting the naming of the prophet Mohammed to a bear in the first comment is the same as naming Hitler the leader of Israel is just rude - your idiocy and lack of timed humour is sickening here. Did a bear kill or the prophet Mohammed systematically 6 millions Jews (and many other homosexuals and ethnic minorities). And you claim others are arrogant just to make a point on a forum? There is no comparison to whom is the moron. :puke:

Let's see if you agree with if it was your sister/mother etc. I doubt it. You seem rather happy to see black and white when unfortunately there are lots of greys. And before you ask - under sudanese law, she is guilty ofc.

Then again no-one will stop the Darfur troubles? Not even the UN. Are they legal too?

Plain wrong, you the gaul to flame me when you have no idea what you are talking about, nor have the descency to read previous posts which already cleared this up,
First the whole thing started because of a poster, not the bear. it is forbidden under Sharia law to depict mohammad, this is in order to stop idolosing and worshipping of him. Now it will go to court and the procecutor will try proove it was done with malice, and she will try proove it was an innocent mistake

Agreed, but imagine the spanish, Portugese and South America cultures with people names Jesus - I reckon there's over a million of them. No Kidding.
If you actually bothered to read my initial reply that would have cleared this up

Ah so its fair game to take the piss out of one thing (and yes in this case it was regarded as mocking, hence the compaint, and subsequent procecution), but not out of another. if you expect me to share your double standards you can kindly stick them where the sun doesnt shine.

You seemed to have missed the point which i again explained later, and again you failed to read that the arrogance was pointing to the fact that it was incinuated that she "should" be allowed to get away with breaking the law because it does not conform to the laws and ethics of foreign parties

You've derailed the discussion enough yourself actually
I am going to put this down to your inherent lack of reading, the thread is still on topic indicated by the subsequent posts

Let's see if you agree with if it was your sister/mother etc. I doubt it. You seem rather happy to see black and white when unfortunately there are lots of greys. And before you ask - under sudanese law, she is guilty ofc.

Before throwing examples at me, if Afghanistan legalised bombing people you dont like, then bombers game over here and blew stuff up are you seriously saying its ok because its legal in their home country?

You are condoning breaking the law in a country she chose to live in, she isnt a political refugee, she didnt go there because she had to she is there out of her own choice, and doing the job out of her own free will so should subsequently follow the laws of the land that are set regradless of what they are. She will now go through the judicary(sp?) system there and rightly so, as i said in the last post so i dont see any point repeating

The UN is not illegal, UN forces are only there as peacekeepers and with permission from the government in UN council who ask for help as they deem it a state of emergency. There could be rival factions in Dafur killing each other in front of them and they could do fuck all about it because they are not allowed to influence the political enviroment
A prime example of this was the Hutu-Tutsi conflict in Rwanda when they could evacuate foreign nationals and protect foreign assets but not help people as they were pulled from their homes and sent off to be butchered.

My mother/sister would never be in that situation because they wouldnt break the law, and for the record i have been to many countries under Sharia law including Saudi arabia which is regarded as one of the more harsh members
