Region 1

I want to get the uncut version of Leon as I've never seen it, but it's only available as a Region 1 DVD. Obviously Region 2 is what most UK DVD players are, but is there a possibility of playing this on one of my three DVD players? :) I've got a LG DVD-ROM drive, a cheap low-end Sony jobby and a big old Sony system downstairs. This regions thing comfuses me :/

Honestly its a piece of piss.

For a start multi-region DVD players are quite commonplace now. Your average player in Currys/Dixons/shithole chain store are still Region 2 though.

Richer Sounds 4 teh win tbh. I picked up a cheap player for £40, its multi-region, plays VCD, SVCD, CD-R, DVD-R, MP3 etc etc etc.

Anyways you might be able to make one of your players multi-region by means of a hack. A lot of players can be made multi-region just by fiddling with the remote control (did it with one of mine).

You should be able to change the hard region coding of your DVD drive too btw (although there's a limit as to how many times you can do this, my TEAC DVD-RW can only be switched 5 times). Check the software/manual for it.

I can't provide exact links atm but list the exact spec/model of your players and I might be able to find a region hack for you later.

The make of DVD player is not important.

Most PC based DVD drives have either firmware or software solutions to effectively make them region-free.

Two bits of software come to mind; DVD Genie for regular drives or DVD Region-Free for drives that are locked to regions.

I think he's referring to PC DVD-ROM drives, you can get specific firmware hacks to flash them and make them region free.

AFAIK you should have problems with the LG drive if you use something like DVD-Genie but the Sony players can't be hacked without a SPECIAL remote. You can hire them but it's pricey (about 70 dollars last time I looked).

bollocks. It's a Sony DAVS-300 that I'd rather watch the DVD on seeing as it's hooked up to a good telly and sound system etc, but if I can't hack it then I guess I'll have to use my DVD ROM :/

I have that version (Japanese) on DVD, its not bad, but there are absolutely no menus whatsoever, and about 7 chapters. Picture quality is pretty good.

Does anyone know of alternatives to DVDGenie, I patched by DVD-ROM drive to be multi-region but the DVD software I have - "Abit Siluro DVD" (Which is WinDVD 3.11 OEM bundled version whatsit) doesn't get recognised as WinDVD by DVDGenie.

I'll ask around on their forums too - but it's taking ages for my registration to get through :)

Having raided the rest of my OEM disks I've managed to get a proper version of WinDVD up and running, so away I go!..

Better steal a flatmates region one before I buy any though.. heh.
