I'd agree that would be the case if people were forced to come up with a certain number of choices but they're not. So in theory whoever gets in has a mandate as they've been voted in by the most people, even if they weren't most peoples first choice. It's the highest common denominator to a certain extent - the party with the most votes across the board.

And this is the other reason :)

My wife/mother/mother-in-law etc... would look at that explanation and instantly decide not to care.

Personally, I was tempted to vote yes but couldn't be arsed voting in the end. Please quote me back on this, pointing out any irony or explanation for the state of the nation...

Another nonsense we have avoided by killing AV is much more expensive elections and days of waiting to see who won - see Northern Ireland for a similar system (single transferrable vote) and the huge delays.

Whilst the same system in Scotland managed to get a result very quickly.

I like the STV system a lot. Local MSP, combined with PR for the make up of the parliament. It doesn't have any AV in it though. :p
