Played this Rockstar mash during my vacvac, completed to somewhere near the 60% mark(so enough to do a valid poke at it).

Not going to go with a long winded explanation and just list some positively nagatives. Some tl:dr at end;

+ Wild west thene carries well, even to late hours.
+ You will play for late hours, the GTA formula is a lifesucker in any format.(not necessarily good)
+ Some nice humor.
+ New'ish features that work quite well in this sort of thing atleast.
+ Big land.

- Big land, yeah, it's a twinblade of a thing.
- Insta kills come too often. Getting killed by semi-ninja dogs when you're in a fight isn't nice.
- Story is a bit, well, meh. Some nice stuff in there, but mostly you're bored to tears just to hear "And now we ride there and shoot x up".
- Everything, from minigames to weapon upgrades(so called there of), seem pointless. You kioll everything with one shot really and what thing shoots the bullets makes little difference. Minigames give you money, nothing mroe really...
- ...which is rather pointless. Safehouses are dirt cheap, missions pay ridicilous and added to a couple of minigames, you'll be rolling in sterling and aid-packs. Challenge -> window -> out.
- Customisation is...well..it would be nice if there was any. Some outfits, which most are either ridicilous to get, ridicilously useless or just poor variations to original. Only real thing i found was the eleggant suit, which hepls you cheat in poker, which bringsmore money and..look up for point.
- Skinning and flower gathering, pointless as it brings you...more money!

---

In a tl:dr fashion - It's a GTA type of game, with lots of things to do, but with everything seeming pointless. Will waste hours of your life, but waste in this case is an actual waste. Will/might entertain, but in no meaningful way. Seemingly a fast, cheap copy of GTA and in dire need of a rewrite, with less focus on long winded story and huge lands of nothing, and more focus on content.

I would entertain a 3.5/5 score for it, simply because it is still fun, but it's not good fun which leaves you layng there like a cheap hooker.

Borrow it, don't buy it.

(Oh and, you can't get it on with hookers 'cause the guy is married. Stop marrying my sandbox rpg guy!)

That was pretty much exactly what I thought. I found it extremely samey, I couldn't play it until the end, was just too boring for me. I occasionally play it when I'm bored with nothing else to do, but I only last a couple of missions before I'm bored as hell.

Like you said, money seems pointless, need more useful stuff to spend the money on to be honest.

Is it worth me playing through the missions?

As i said i'm not finished(got the box and game taken away by evil gnomes), but so far i have to say that if you take out the occasional laugh at some ridicilous things in there and the sometimes interesting mission variations, the main story doesn't seem too riveting.

And being that it's MOSTLY just that, long storytelling(5 minute cutscene with 10 seconds of talk abut the mission), i wouldn't say it's actually worth aspiring.

But ofcourse if you've got the game, i'd stick through it just to see the story through and have a hope of some kind of "aaaah" experience.

Who knows, maybe the last 35-40% of the game i'm missing are the very bestest of gaming storytelling ;)

If you like Westerns, you'll like the game. Loved the single player game and the story, but the multiplayer left me cold.

Yeah that's a fair point, the western theme is a reason you forgive a lot of things. Not many good, or good'ish, western games out there.

Just did that today :) going to play it tonight. I never seem to play games more than a few hours though, unless it's fighting/footy games, so I doubt I'll get anywhere near completion.

Watching my neighbour play it at the mo, he at the end of the 2nd area. It seems rather buggy. Few missions ago involving a stagecoach, it would only move if he shot & killed one of the horses. Nice western feel 6/10.

Interesting to read this thread. My spidey sense was tingling when the hype was hyping before launch and subsequently stayed away from it.

After the massive letdown of GTA4 I was sceptical about RDR but in the end I loved it. I got into the western mood and played it that way, camping in the wilds, hunting creatures (the hunting missions were one of the best parts, like taking out a bear with a knife) and completing the side missions and main missions. Is worth sticking through to the end. Personally I enjoyed the story was something out of the old Spaghetti Westerns. Wasn't a fan of the multiplayer though was fun for a bit, but its the sort of game you need mates to play it with. So when it comes to the PC i'll get it to play multiplayer. Compared to other western games it has beaten GUN and Half life mod Wanted to be my favourite western game. I do wish you would not run out of bounties to catch, as I loved that part of the game.

Oh and remember to hog tie and woman and put her on the tracks, always fun.

I loved it tbh. I don't play that many games with a storyline, but the GTA line of games. In every GTA game I've pretty much skipped all the small vids as I found them to be rather retarded. But in RDR I watched every one of them, that John Marston guy can be hilarious at time :) Never played the multiplayer bit, but from what I've seen on youtube it doesn't seem that good..

I liked the story and the western mood. The hunting and treasure bits were ace aswell! The 'kill a bear with melee knife' mission got me killed countless times, but got it in the end :D The last survivalist mission killed me tho, took ages!

The best games I've ever played from one end to another

It's not called Grand Theft Horse for nothing ;)

I haven't been brave enough to try it yet myself, the hype scared me away from it. I have been keeping an hungry eye on Dragonage: Origins though as i long for a good RPG on the PS3...

Could you call GTH... sorry RDR an RPG or is that too much of a stretch?

All rockstar games are the same. Completely and Utterly overated. Go here, do this x 1000. No variation what so ever. For pure fun, the Saints Row franchise pisses over GTA from a mile high

Bit of a stretch really. You can't affect your character outside changing premade cloth sets and some random "moral" choices(which affect f*ck all really). It's an rpg in a way that you play a role of a person that is completely premade, but not in a way that lets you play what you want.

Rockstar really needs a character editor.

And what Marc said; Saints forever ;)
