Record Companies Breaking the Law

The very plans for them to use and stop people breaking law seems to be drawing questions as to whether they're breaking the law

Now this is logic...

A 1992 law allows music listeners to make some personal digital copies of their music. In return, recording companies collect royalties on the blank media used for this purpose. For every digital audio tape (DAT), blank audio CD, or minidisc sold, a few cents go to record labels.

Never knew that. Quite frankly I think it's about time recording companies stopped fighting the inevitable and start working to find a viable solution. That's admittedly is no easy task, but these companies should have the knowledge, foresight, initiative and dynamic outlook to be able to find ideas that'll work for both the consumer and record labels.*

The labels are worried that the rise of home CD-burners has eaten into album sales, particularly after the worst year in a decade for the music industry.

Ahem - maybe if they manufactured less boy bands and tried to market their quality acts a bit better, people may be a little less disenchanted with them.
Even teeny boppers are struggling to find the difference between each Westlife song, the assume it's a different boxed special edition and buy it anyway...

the people causing all the problems are the publishers...
they get all the credit, and most of the money

online retailing directly with the artists is one way forward in my opinion. Id rather the band get my money, than EMI, or Virgin

I agree - bands would just appear in the WebDev forum and advertise for a webdesigner and where to find some good MP3 ripping software... I wonder if Liam Gallagher types manc.. ahh, possibilities.
