hmm, I'm not really clued in to UK pricing, but I can say that an AMD 3000+ athlon is pretty good value for money imo.
you don't mention your current system, so it's imposible for me to plot a proper upgrade path for you as I do not know if it's worth your while to move your current ram to the new mobo, your gfx card etc.

I'm sure it is, but what is in it at the the moment? a pentium3? what memory? hard disk?
I'd like to know these things because I will base the options of what I think you should get partially on what you already have. for example, if you currently have a sata disk and dimms that run at 333mhz FSB then I will try to find a mobo/cpu combination that is not only within your price range but also allows you to keep your current ram and disk.
