Recommend me a cable router please?

As topic really I've had ADSL for years, and I'm aware for games it gives a lower ping than Cable, but my current situation dictates I need to swap to cable.

I need one that can be wired but also has wireless for my laptop.

Basically I'll use 10 or 20 meg cable (Virgin media ) and connect two PCs to it via LAN cables, and a laptop via wireless.

Is this one any good? I chose it because it resembles my ADSL Netgear router tbh I can't see if it can be used for cablees as well as wireless though. And is 108 twice as good as 54? (Silly question??)

Yes that netgear one is good, I have one of these (not this version though, but it is N series and gigabit ethernet.) Netgear WNR3500 RangeMax Premium Wireless-N Gigabit Edition Cable Router

I have one of these Linksys WRT54GL 54Mbps Open Source Wireless Cable Router beacuse none of my devices support wireless-N networking. Had it for 2 years since switching to Virgin and not had a single problem with it.

Be warned - some of the recent Linksys routers have wireless problems. Random dropouts for no reason. There's a massive thread on the official support forums with no official response so I'd say stick with netgear.

Throd, unless you need a powerful wireless signal this will do you fine.

Nar, my and Yodas ADSL ping at like 5 to 20 on a css server, whereas everyone else is on cable getting 30 to 50.

Nath that one is 54mbs, am I right in saying then that the 108 thing doesnt matter?

The 108 thing will give faster throughput on the wireless, as far as wired connections go it'll make no difference - it's not related to the ethernet side of things. That one you linked is a rangemax too, so it'll have a more powerful signal, might be worth considering if you think wireless is going to be an issue.

The 108Mb/s is 802.11n, which only more recent or higher end laptops will have. Obviously it's faster than 54Mb/s (802.11g) but it's not comparable with 100Mb/s wired (802.3) due to the wireless adding massive overheads for error correction and so on (I think in a good environment, i.e. near the router/no walls/not too many other wireless networks nearby/no interference, you can get about 74Mb/s).

I switched to Buffalo from Netgear and I have to say for cable the Buffalo router is way better.

Throd has always had one of the lowest pings and mine has always been one of the highest, still only about 30 but even so higher than throds on adsl.

Yoda is on cable throd.

Speak to virgin they often run new routers for new customers its free and netgear so worth a shot.

Also on a side note the 50mb free router is a not to shabby wireless n rangemax netgear one.

Ah yes you are indeed correct. The 108MB/s thing was the proprietry one a few manufacturers introduced. 74MB/s is the average data throughput for 802.11n though

The router is down in my living room behind the TV and I'm getting a consistent 211Mbit on my bedroom media PC which is in the opposite corner of the house. Its streaming HD off my Slingbox no problem. I bought this package because it came with the USB adapter as well (the PC has a wireless G card in it); because you need both bits of kit to get the most out of it. I've only had it a week but I'd def recommned it. Piece of piss to set up WPS on it too (push two buttons and you're done).

I assume you mean you're connected at 211Mb/s, which would be normal. Surprised you get it at range though, mine only manages 130Mb/s (about 10m and 2 internal walls)

edit: there are about 12 other wifi networks nearby though, which is probably ruining mine ...
