Running out of memory on PC. Need a large capacity hard drive (500 GB absolute minimum) to off load movies & boxed sets. Anyone got one they recommend ? Don't want to spend an absolute fortune on it

tia

(edit: you can't get a 1.2 petabyte drive yet, can you ?)

I would look at getting a samsung disk and a separate enclosure but it looks like this could be easier i have never used one but samsung disks are very reliable.

I have a WD 1tb drive that nearly 3 years old and still going strong but they tend to be abit more.

You can get 2tb ones http://www.ebuyer.com/product/175739 but 2 1tb ones is cheaper

Had a WD as well, 2 years old and its worked without issue. A group of us at work bought em so we got discounts.

I had a western digital usb HDD. It worked for some time but then started getting weird errors. Apparently it overheated and each time it got too hot it would not work at all. I recommend some sort of cooling if you want it to last longer, or only use it to store stuff and plug out when finished using it.

Thats all I want it for: to basically act as a video library - I'll only plug it in when I want to watch stuff or transfer stuff onto it.

I also recommend western digital. My housemate bought his first external drive at the same time as me but got a different brand, he's now been through 3 drives that have all broken before finally buying a western digital one himself, mines never had a problem yet.

Read some reviews first! WD disks are great, but some of their external stuff makes my vacuum sound quiet....

Beware of WD for switches on books - they don't have an on/off switch so pull the power plug when you're done (else it'll hum all night consuming power, very quietly though).

What Cyra said definitely doesn't stand for their books, for their USB only powered stuff I agree, but clearly as a library you want a powered one, and they are quite quiet.

500GB
Western Digital My Book Essential 500GB External USB: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

1TB
Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1TB USB 2.0: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Slightly cheaper you can go for:

Buffalo Drivestation 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Buffalo Drivestation 1.5TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

I've found on my system they seek quicker, but they are noisier. They do have an off switch though.

Good luck :)
