What do you mean by best?

I take it from the fact that you like burning music the laptop needs to have a CD/DVD writer?
Do you need any software with the laptop? (Some uni provide copies of certain applications for free or you may be into Linux/open source software)
Will you be carrying it around much?
Do you intend to work on it alot? (ie writing long essays?) Will you get a separate keyboard? Are you taking a separate monitor to uni?
I think you have gone for a good price range, laptops/mobiles have a habit of getting damage/stolen/lost at uni so cheaper is good and you can always get a new laptop after 2 years.

I think the basic Dell models are quite cheap as well, but never forget, you get what you pay for =)

Three reasons to get an Acer laptop from Laptopsdirect.co.uk

1. Acer 5735, £400
Acer Aspire 5735Z Laptop LX.AU50X.018 - Laptops Direct
2. Acer are part of the MS Win7 upgrade programme. Buy a machine with Vista on it now, you can get the equivalent version of Win7 when it's released.
Windows® 7 Upgrade Offer
3. Buy a 3 year extended warranty and you can swap in your laptop for a new one in 3 years.
Buy one get one free - Laptops Direct

Thats if an Acer lasts three years

/me scratches his head

I don't know what I'm doing wrong then. My Acer machine has been going nearly 2 years without any problems. Just lucky I guess.

I had an Acer monitor from when they were new. My first flat screen around the time I built my new PC. £100 from Tesco, it was an awesome panel. Given it to a friend since I got my Samsung and it is still going strong for him.

Using a 6 month old acer one its fine no problems Dads laptop is 3 or 4 months old now no problems either and the laptop replaced by this netbook was a acer that my G Diddy uses now 18 months old ish and after a rebuild it was good as gold. I see far more Sony laptops being sent back though work than i do acers and we sell more acers buy a facter of 4 or 5. But acer customer support is a pain in the arse.

I have had 2 Acers, both have been excellent value and quality.

Dell is ok, but the customer support is enough reason not to use them. I have more than 1 horror story caused by Dell and their outsourced IT support :(

Check out the Aspire range:

Dell - blah. Customer service sucks. I known them to take a £3000+ pc away for repairs from an IT technician who told them what wrong. Time passes and they say they cant fix it as dont know what wrong, they get told again what wrong and told expect it fixed and returned inside the week... next door the person got home from work to find his computer sitting out on his path leading to his house and to make it worse they didnt even fix it. Great customer service :p
Dell also uses generic parts (ie ram) that quite outdated/at end of life and therefore you dont reach the performance the specs should.

As for Acers, my "father in law" to be has sold many hundreds of these, never have anyone come back to say something is wrong with them. Yet countless dell's and various other makes constantly need returning. I love my Acer laptop, solid spec's and was alot cheaper then the big named equivalents

Sony and Toshiba are solid makes, but you pay a whack extra for the name. Acer gives you both the high specs and affordable prices.... also the screens on acer laptops are some the best around.

I've never found that you pay a premium for Toshiba, Sony definitely though. HP's - they're great too, and well priced.

i find you do for Toshiba, not as much as you do for Sony, but at least upto 6months ago there was additional cost to get a toshiba compared to the equivelant acer etc.

I guess I always just thought as Acer as cheap rather than Tosh being a premium :).
