Heh, that letter must have been written by the original 'Angry of Tunbridge Wells'. Only people who own property should be allowed to vote indeed! I'd guess he's a supporter of workhouses too...keeps those noisy working class types off the street and all that.

He's completely missed the point though, and instead he's focused on the morons that disrupt these kind of events, and on the inconvenience caused. He completely fails to 'get it'. Governments and big business do 'get it' of course, and are more than happy to see a bit of aggro at these events. It gives them an opportunity to show how 'tough' they are on crime, as well as ignoring the legitimate demands made by the peaceful protestors.

thought nicking the till out of a burger bar was a
political statement? Or why campaigners for freedom
would desecrate a shrine to the very people who fought
and died for that freedom?

I like the points made here. Anyone know the answers to these?

Those are funny points made. Not to be taken too seriously.
Since they make sweeping generalisations.
The problem with these gatherings are they always get hijacked by morons giving the whole movement a bad name.

They're not really all that "sweeping" since these are the basic beliefs of the majority of people who turn up and things that actually happened! It is hard to distinguish the people with a proper point from the idiots. It seems to me that the majority DO have a point, yet it is a percentage of these same people who go around causing trouble.
Maybe some people should Protest the fact that idiots like these turn up on protests? Would that work? Nope. We can sit here and type in all the cliches under the sun, but the fact remains the wankers spoil it for the majority of people who have good intentions, no matter how poorly executed. This is pretty much true for most areas of life. It's a sad situtation but what can we do eh? We can't change human nature.
To get all nerdy and quote aline from Terminator 2 (of all films) the scene where John turns to Arnie and says "We're not going to make it are we?" and arnie simply says "It's in your nature to destroy yourselves."
We CAN'T change thee people. I beleive if the police were not there then there would have been FAR more trouble and damage caused to property than even last year. It's not about some police state but when people go out to cause shit, innocents will end up getting caught up. To them I can only say "What the hell were you doing in London that day, in that area anyway? It's not like you can say you didn't know about it, is it?"
The police can be cunts, but then so can the general public.

Brilliant post Morpheus. I nearly laughed by batty off :D

Don't take it too serious guys. It was meant to be a humorous take on these things not 100% fact :)

Loved the bit about 'travellers' :)

Not alot of a problem - after causing a few short traffic jams they were blocked in at the side of Euston station for 2 1/2 hours, by a 'police cordon' then released one by one after being interviewed/ photographed/ searched etc. (kinda a police dry run for the soho cordon, in turn a dry run for the oxford street cordon)

I guess they achieved exactly what they wanted. Lots of TV coverage, (especially that bloke that tried to stand on his bike seat - then fell off straight in from of the camera!) with most news coverage mentioning the pollution/traffic etc issues the were protesting about.

A mate of mine was in amongst the May 1st chaos. The day after he phoned me up and told me what happened with the cops beating up people and all that. Looks like those traffic cams were shut off for a reason.

I agree that there are lots of people who just want to ruin these things, seeing it as a good excuse for a ruck. But then again in this country, protesting "peacefully" usually gets you absolutely nowhere. Fair enough, protesting violently gets you even less.

Something SoWat said basically sums it all up for me:

...nothing is going to change the status quo as long as people in the 'civilised' western world continue to be more concerned about whether they can afford a widescreen telly, than about some poor kid dying because nobody gives a fuck.

I think you missed the point - the entire letter was written with an overdose of irony and sarcasm, he was being VERY extreme to get his point across.

You bastard, Ono!

I read the whole thing before I realised it was from last year. :( (I did strike me as strange that people seemed to be talking about an event which hadn't taken place yet. 30th April riots? )

Good thread though. Interesting stuff.

Here's hoping for a peaceful but effective tomorrow.
