Apparently it could create 'strangelets' these could cause a chain reaction that converts all the normal matter on the planet into one big glob of 'strange' matter...

Heh, I remember reading a SF book about something similar. They'd built a particle accelerator around one of the moons of Jupitor, and they were going to recreate the big bang. Obviously, something didn't quite click about what they were doing.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Erm it does say "Designed to investigate the origins of the universe" i.e. the Big Bang...

Theres also a possibility that it will create one Micro Blackhole per second of operation and that if Hawking is wrong these could gather at the earths core and eat away at it...

Edit - Oh and Happy Birthday :)

read a SF book (Hyperion i think it was not 100% sure) where scientists had accidently created a wormhole of some sort which sucked out the earths core thus making it uninhabitable

Thanks to the Large Hadron Collider...

Channel 4 - News - Machine 'could create time tunnel'

The scary bit is where the scientists say they arent sure what will happen when they turn it on...

As Sting said "Never saw no miracle of Science that didnt go from a blessing to a curse."

Rubbish.

Superglue...fantastic invention. Good for repairing wounds in the battle field.
Stickyback plastic
Velcro
Stanner stair lifts

Strange matter Dark matter, strangelets...funny how they make up a word for something they cant really show exists.

Personally I think the egg custard theory holds more water and tastes better too

I suddenly found myself thinking about Doom3 for some reason...

They work on teleporter technology and end up accidently opening a gate to 'hell'...

Board up your house and stock up on supplies everyone, and remember, DONT GO OUT LOOKING FOR THE CAT! :D

OT. I just watched a program(Unreported World) about how the Egyptians(the government, the people, etcetc) hate Christianity, come accross it at all yourself? Apparently if your a Christian living in Egypt you can't do anything. I might have not been paying attention properly and missed that it was mainly aimed at conversions of muslim > christianity.

You can at least read about it here

Granted I haven't seen the program or read the link BUT the treatment of apostates in Muslim countries has been a bone of contention for a while. The current pope made a few angry gestures in his first early speeches about it.
