From my thane.

I was soloing around abit in bg0 03:53. I ran past MB and started to swim for albion side, but then a ranger shoots me in the back from the shore.
he got 1 shot at me before i did /face, turned around and intercepted him.

I used my insta bolt to interrupt one of his shots and then the melee fight began.
I was like: "haha.. look at this little archer.. whats he gonna do? melee me to death lol "

After the fight i was left with 5%HP after meleeing a luriken ranger. I really thought that archer classes sucks in melee combat.
I mean.. hes a stealther and im a tank tanks eat stealthers for lunch.. and this stealther was archer =p ranged based class? eh.

btw.. this is not a whine, im just a bit chocked.
he must have been twinked or thanes r gimes. :>

hunters are range based char and i think most ppl will agree they hit pretty hard in melee

Lurikeen Rangers have high dex and can sometimes hit non-stop, so for every one hit you get in they`ve probably hit you twice , and if your unbuffed and he`s critshotted u , thas probably why it was so close, Hunters melee skill is by far the best of all the archers for the shear fact they use a spear

yes, hunters can mostly hold their own in melee ... especialy norse like mine

but... i would have expected most tank classes to be able to beat an archer class, regardless of realm... i know i tend to shy away from taking them on 1v1 with my hunter anyways

it also depends on the spec i guess, my hunter is bow-specced and isn't made for melee ... maybe the archer you encountered was more melee-orientated

Depends who he has specced, how hard did the arrow hit you? He might be one of those CD Pierce types w ho only autotrain bow. In which case Id expect it to be a close fight.

Reminds me of the time I PA'd and double garrotted a kobbie caster and didn't even get him down to half health. I didn't miss my PA either...with MP weapons and capped stats.

I really hate SC. It has totally ruined the game.

Are rangers first-line tanks? No. Are they a walkover in melee? Definitely not. And then again, thanes aren't front line tanks either - they're an offensive hybrid class.

A ranger is on the same HP table as a thane and may well have specced his weapon skill almost as high as you. Rangers have 5 lines to split their points between (bow, weapon, pathfinding, stealth and celtic dual) but especially at bg0 levels most don't put many points in stealth or CD. Pathfinding gives them a set of self buffs including a damage add, and they are dual wielding - that damage add counts on both weapons

Lastly, look at the melee resists and vulnerabilities. You're in chain armour, he's in reinforced. Bad news - luri rangers tend to use pierce weapons, which get a bonus vs chain. Contrariwise, if you were using a slashing weapon you had a penalty against his armour. Of course, crush gets a bonus against reinforced, so if you use hammers it helps.

Don't think of rangers as being like crappy cloth casters with stealth and a bit of armour/ Think of them as second-line fighters with a decent ranged attack, and give them the respect their abilities deserve. Then hammer them until they make that luri squealy sound!

Arent rangers on the rouge hp table, Im pretty sure the only mid viking class on that table in the skald. Thanes are on the hybrid tank hp talbe, which I think is higher. I think.

There are Rangers and Rangers. We have a lot of lines to spec in and as such a lot of versatility. For example, Elendor, my pet rangeress (gimped in my oppinion, but i'm still having fun) is specced high in Recurve bow and Pathfinding. In other words she hits hard with the bow and has a lot of nice buffies. But on the other hand i gave up stealth (everyone sees me from a mile away, ask anyone) and weapon spec. If i go into melee with a caster, the caster wins.
Other Rangers have other specs, the one you encountered might have had his pierce and celtic dual skills higher than usual, thus a higher melee damage output.

And yes, lets not neglect the SC factor. Its very important

1.62 - The archer will be uber again, and which archer class was the best with bow... That'd be the scout. You just wait for Rapid fire and scouts will be insanely powerful again.
