I recently bought 2x 1gig ram sticks, however its showing them as 2x 512....

This happened to my brother.. where he biught from a different guy. Are they really 512 or 1gig? anyway to check for sure?

Clear the CMOS to be sure and where did you buy them? What mobo you got? Also download CPU-Z and run that. I would clear the CMOS first.

should be called 2x 512mb 1024kit

but to make sure .. remove 1 of them.. if it now says: 512 instead of 1024.. you know enough

but also you can check those black block thingies on the ram stick

(mine says 32m****** (which obviously means 32mb here).. so.. 32x 16(black blocks) = 512

dunno the english name for the "black blocks" but you'll know what i mean ;)

if you buy a "1024MB Kit of 2" or thelikes... it's usually actually 2 times 512, but tested for dual-channel compatibility...

And, are you sure your motherboard supports 1024MB sticks? if it doesn't, that might be the reason the mobo sees them as 512 sticks

I had the same problem when i first got new memory recently. Fixed it by swapping the sticks around in the memory slots. Guess they werent in 100% contact with the slots or something.

how many ram slots does it have, if it has 4 it maybe limited to 512 per slot, if its 2 then have u checked for any bios updates.

Apparently the type of chipset may not accept it. But would this mean it only reads 1 gig rather than 2 gig? Ive contacted the seller but he insists its 2 x 1 gig sticks

English if you can find out the model number for your motherboard often you will find you can get bios updates from the manufacturer of it, when you turn your pc on have a look to see if it gives u a model number often in the top left of the screen.

As stated before, it might be that ur mobo doesn't support 1 gig sticks.

If u really have no clue whatsoever of the model of ur motherboard, I wouldn't recommend that u do the bios update urself.
