Hiya all

Bit of a mystery here, been on 3-4 forums so far and found the same or similar problems, not seen an answer yet, so I'll assume no one's found it, for this reason this post is a tad long, explaining everything that has been done to the computer.

-------------- System spec
Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz
Radeon 9600 SE 256
512MB DDR RAM
160GB HD
Windows XP professional (with SP2)
--------------

I bought a new gfx card last august, from a GeForce 4 Mx 440 to a Radeon 9600 SE. When I originally set the device up I did a format and 'rebuilt' the computer making sure all the drivers etc where correctly installed. I then made a norton ghost image of the drive.

I tried playing Call of Duty soon after and found that the system locked up after anything from 5 to 10 minutes ingame. the system was properly locked up, Ctrl-Alt-Del wouldnt work, nothing except a manual reboot would help. I took this as a call of duty error after my other games seemed to work ok.

Everything was fine untill about a week ago, my old hard-drive failed, and I got a new 160GB drive to replace it, put the old norton ghost image back on, looked around for updated drivers and then got my games back on, then about 3-4 days after that I re-installed Call of Duty, forgetting the error I had in august. after getting locked out of a few multiplayer games I tried installing new drivers, which didnt solve the problem. I gave it up as a bad job and went back to DAoC, after perhaps a day from the time I re-installed Call of Duty, DAoC locked up, this is the first time it had locked up in any other game. It has since begun to do it roughly once an hour, sometimes more sometimes less.

I've defragmented the drive, tried re-installing the drivers, done a norton AV scan but none of this seemes to have helped.

I've checked a few forums and found quite a few posts with similar stories, but no answers. there was one on FH, from janurary the link is below.

Any help much appreciated :)

Could it be a DirectX issue? Or overheating perhaps?

Just checked how hot the inside of the computer is and found that the heat-sync is very hot, this may well be normal (hardware is not my strong point, so I dont know these things), I checked in the bios and the CPU temperature readout seemed to be well below the warning level. Will leave the side off though to see if this helps.

Thanks for the help so far :)
