R.I.P Poly Styrene

Poly Styrene has died, the singer from X-Ray Spex.

This was the first punk band I was into, before the Damned, before the Pistols.

I remember I was at school and they had what they used to call a "pop mime", i.e kids dressing up and miming to music.

So all these kids go on stage, miming to Abba songs and what have you, still dressed in thier school uniforms. Then this girl comes on, dressed in the full kit, washer-womans turban and everything, and does the song "Oh Bondage, Up yours" by X-Ray spex. It was a moment in my life. And in a few of my school teachers I suspect too

Really, deeply sad. X-ray Spex were groundbreaking in every sense and she was far too young to die. RIP.

Only just found out this, without you throd I would never have known.

Ironically I was listening to them over the weekend for the first time in months. Such a shame. I will continue to blast X-ray spex from my stereo in memory
