... which is proving harder than it should be to answer.

I have ADSL with 512Kbs download and 256Kbs upload. Does this mean that I can have a maximum of (approx.) 58K downloading AND have 28K uploading at the same time?

Or

Do downloads and uploads share the same 'wire' if you like, and jostle each other for packet space? ie would my system upload a packet then download a packet, then upload a packet... etc? Or is it true, simultaneous, two-way communication?

I find on my cable that uploading hogs the entire bandwidth.

Downloads are no problem, I can download a couple of things at a combined speed of well over 80k per sec (512/128 cable).

Uploading's a bastard though. So I'd imagine they're maximums for one way traffic...

Nuts. Thanks, Sar.

Anyone else have a version of the truth that I'm more happy with?

Oh shit - i'm wrong. Time for some google cache cut n' pasting.

The main reason upload slows download and vice versa is that downloading at full speed takes some of the upload channel for ack packets. Not a lot, but some. About one small ack packet for every 2 large data packets.. With really unbalanced ADSL speeds, like 1500/128, this small up traffic of acks is actually quite a chunk of your 128..
So - basically - yes it does, but not much for a 512/256 connection

ADSL - Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line

Asymetric means data can be sent both ways at the same time.

Asymmetric (not Asymetric) means "Having no balance or symmetry"

Ie - that upload and download speed are not the same, as opposed to symmetric (SDSL) where they are the same.

well

what jas says is correct.

summo, it is my experience, that a simultaneous upload and download can go over those speeds, i.e. they work seperately not packet up, packet down....

but...

ya won't be that pleased, cos my dsl isn't capped properly, and i do occasionally get lot faster downloads than i should, so i dunno if that's why.

I sometimes get a real shitty download rate, although I do know it depends on who you are getting it from. Although i can get a combined d/l of about 80 if i get a few things at once, seems as tho maximum I ever get is around 60 K for a single d/l tho. Not uploaded a thing yet mind you

Odd. I never found when any d/l slow down when uploading.
