Question about University

I'm going to keep this short because I've been on the fucking UCAS site from about midnight to 8am and its done my skull in. Basically I want to know what the chances are of getting into university, slightly lacking the necessary grades required. I assume that not all courses are full, so do they sometimes take people in that haven't achieved the points that the course requires? I realise its a bit late to have made this decision, but I want to try and get into uni before the term starts. I've got money to relocate etc, so that isn't a problem. If anyone has managed to get into uni this way, then I'd be glad of any advice. I'm aiming at something in the Literature/Media field. If this doesn't work out, I'll go to college for a year and boost my grades up, so I am ready the next year. Just figured I'd give this a shot, since its getting close and I know clearing and that are open now.

I would have been in Uni by now if I hadn't moved to Australia. Grr. :( And yes I realise people "told me so" about going to aus etc and yes I have messed my life up again! (see old threads for previous fuck ups) but...well...just help me, alright :(

I'm off for a mushroom slice at a BP Garage.

erm, if you applied via UCAS, you should be in clearing. Now. Right this very second.

I spent 5 hours doing clearing, because theres thousands of other scared people doing the same. Ergo, theres not going to be many open places left at the good unis by now (as results came out last week yes?) but go to clearing now if you can and look and search and pray.

Funny story: I almost ended up in Brunel as a result of clearing. If Surrey hadnt called me 10 mins later, before I'd had a chance to accept Brunel, I'd now be a very scared kid.

you've probably left it a little late for clearing now, results were out over a fortnight ago and i expect most of the decent places have gone by now.

if you don't mind waiting for uni another year, i suggest applying to a local college and doing a couple of as courses, just to get your grades up and give you some more ucas points and apply for 2007 via ucas.

if you'll be 21 by september '07, take a year out and bum women.

Thank god I decided to go the long way, won't need uni till I'm 20... 2 years of college starting in 10 or so days.

Will apply to a uni before I even get the results.

Did you not go then Throd?

No mate, I didnt even do A levels. It wasnt such a thing in 1980 when I left school. In fairness this government has gone on about "education education education" etc, but where has it got you all? Lots of people leave university with a pony degree in watching television, then get a shit completely unrelated job , if they're lucky. They may as well have got a shit job when they was 16 or 18, then at least they would have had time to work up the ladder, rather than just get themselves and their families into debt.
Im not convinced its not even just a way for the government to keep unemployment figures down :)

edit my original comment was meant to be humourous though, not a dig. You do what you like, its your life. :)

I haven't actually applied via UCAS. I wasn't in the country at the time all this is supposed to happen, and had intended to come back and just get a job. I've had a think about it though and I really want to continue my education and eventually experience Uni, even if it means going back to college. What Brunel are you on about by the way? We had a campus opposite our secondary school and it was pretty nice. I used to sneak into there and buy lunch. :) It was in Isleworth.

So its not possible to get into uni without going through the UCAS process? I've heard people say they have directly contacted universities, but it seems as if UCAS is big boy shit nowadays. Balls, I'll find a college once I get to London and get some more grades and give it another go next year. I have to find a flat in London. Thats going to be slightly loads of fun.

You don't have to go through ucas, you can apply directly to the uni (some unis anyway). Ring the ones you want to goto and ask for late application forms and see if they'll do it.

Things have changed a fair bit tho - jobs that in the past didnt require a degree for entry level now do - its just another way of winnowing down the applicant numbers.

Once you've got that first decent job in the industry you aimed for the degree ceases to have much value.

Personally I'd be happy if one of my kids wanted to be a plumber or electrician or builder - hard work but the rewards are fantastic and if your any good there's no end of work plus you can be your own boss or do up property and sell it on - beats 99% of office jobs..

Throd, remember this rant from months ago? :D

Education in this country is going to shit. There are fucking CHEMISTRY departments closing down and physics departments left right and centre downsizing because the universities can't afford to keep them open, whilst simultaniously making a shitload of wonga on the bullshit *studies courses.

With every intent to offend: people who do bullshit social science or humanities or media studies (oh how I hate media studies students) are a fucking menace. They clog up universities and get into massive debt when at the end of the day they should have just been brickies. Not everyone is clever enough to get a good degree, but the government rekons they are and implement endless policy to basicly make up figures to support their claims and send the country further into the tertiary services industry more and more every day.

In 20 years this will be a nation of accountants, marketers, PR drones, media consultants and hair dresses. All the real industry will be in India and China and we'll be shit. We'll just be another random country with a shite economy.

Thats because we cant afford to compete in manufacturing industries anymore, we have to specialise in tertiary industries and a bullshit economy to maintain the way of life that people expect, hence massive personal and government debt ( haha france is in an even worse state - if they are a single firm/person they would be declared bankrupt ).

Solution? Buy precious metals and property and pray to god the markets crash later rather than sooner.

Global Capitalism is inherently flawed, but apparently nobody wants to stand up and say it.

What course are you looking to do? With what job in mind?

Honestly, I think uni is just a way of forcing the masses into debt. It's not an intellectual mecca, it's just a box ticking exercise for the most part. Unless you are really sure what career you want to do, and you are entirely sure you will stick it out, I'd avoid it.

but if everyone did the sciences, wouldn't that result in thousands of people with qualifications for a limited number of occupations? it was the same with IT qualifications, was it not?

bollocks. there are some ridiculous courses at some universities, and whilst i share a deep-rooted pathological hatred for media students, i'm intending to study film at university because that's the area in which i want to work.

i'd be a fucking useless brickie, so you're better off that i go to uni or i'd be sat around on the dole

nonsense imo. I had a huge amount of jobs between schools. sign to a temp agency (you have those in the uk?) and you get to do all kinds of stuff and meet all kinds of people. I worked in all kinds of places from a steel mill to restaurants to working with hazardous chemicals to data-entry. Some were shit indeed but you're out of the house, making money and meeting people.
