I finally took the leap to install the latest point release.
only to find out that I can not log on to any server anywhere, I am not sure if it is my router causing this.
I try to log on and I get a message "no challenge for address".

This is not a flame Shalvin m8, but I am still amazed at the number of people who download and install these patches without reading any of the documentation or warnings on the web, stating that none of the existing mods are compatible with the new version. As a result Shalvin, virtually no-one has upgraded their servers yet to the new version. Barrysworld aint, thats for sure.

You need to wait until new versions of the various mods are around, then it is likely most everyone will upgrade. You can wait till then or go back to 1.17 until this is done.

There's a program here that allows you to switch betwen versions 1.17 and 1.27 and back again. It's for when you want to play on different servers which have the different versions: http://quakequakequake.com/bugfix.htm
