So I now get to look forward to watching our nations athletes win lots of precious metal, circular-shaped discs, in the the capital of the UK in 7 years time.

Its to protect the official sponsors of the games so they get more benefit than companies that are purely freeloading.

Of course this doesnt really represent a free market place now does it...but there you go....

This is already done though using the words "Official Sponsor", used in many sports and other events.
Jeez the world sucks.

As it says in the article, there's plenty of existing legislation to protect sponsors. This is effectively putting copyright on words and dates that aren't normally protected by IP legislation, and as such, is well fekkin dodgy (imho).
