Qos or viao?

my flatmate is after a new lappy and we have settled on the HD Qosimo (from Tosh) or the HD Viao.

Technically speaking, these laptops seem to be pretty much identical apart from memory card interfaces and the choice of HD optical drive (HDDVD for the tosh and BD for the sony, obviously).

So the decision is coming down to build quality, reliability, weight and past user experiences. There is an 800g or so difference in weight and because each has a large HD screen the sizes are pretty much the same.

Does anyone have any input on either of these models (either relevant to the current hardware versions, or historical)?

Cheers,

Sony uses X-black screens which is a bit like marmite. Some people like it (me) because of the clearer and brighter picture, but some people hate the glossy reflective surface. I like my Sony VAIO, but I'm guessing it's more expensive than the Toshiba?

The viao is about 100 quid dearer - probably partly due to the high cost of bluray optics currently.

both are similary priced, and are similar spec wise

viao is more of the trendy and lighter one, the qosimo are more bulky and nosiey all of em have fans that make a noise after a bit.

support wise both are the same but be warned if you lose any of the cables both sony and tosh lappys have been known to use propertiry connections for cables that plug into the laptop end and replacement for theses cost a bit should you end up losing em.

vaio brand also fetchs abit more than thosh lappys. my higher spec toshiba qos lappy whent for £500 last year and lower spec both gfx and cpu wise vaio whent for £800 on ebay

tbh for hdd shizzels you may as well save your cash and gor for cheaper dell,hp or asus alternatevs you dont need a hd dvd or blu ray player to enjoy HD stuff:)

From suporting both in work after the recent changes with Toshiba repairs Tosh are not so hot. At the moment there is no UK repair center you ship your laptop some where in the UK and then it gose off to Holland i think. The Sony call logging can be a bitch the first time but once you have the account setup its fairly easy

Xblack screens are really nice however my brother has a sony laptop on which the mother board died. He sent it back they had replaced the hd and the screen but not the only thing that was broken the mobo, he returned it they fitted a new mobo then tried to charge him for water damage.

He's never spilt anything on it and takes real good care of his hardware. In total it had to go back to sony 3 times before they fixed it and it took 4 months including 4 days off work when they said they would ship it back to him via courier but didn't.

Both of us wouldn't touch sony stuff with a barge pole since.

Oh and sony doesn't have a laptop repair center in the uk either it's all done by a 3rd party support company who are really bad at customer service.

Every company has its issues now and again so go with the best spec model for the price and hope you don't have issues.
