Warner Bros on Friday announced that it would exclusively back Sony's Blu-ray high definition format and drop HD DVD releases at the end of May.

Warner claims that it initially supported both HD DVD and Blu-ray to provide consumers with a choice. The company now believes, however, that the move led to consumer confusion.

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger," the company said in a statement. "We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."

The decision slightly increases the value proposition of the PlayStation 3, which of course supports playback of Blu-ray movies in addition to games.

As it currently among the big five movie studios, Sony, Disney, and Warner now back Blu-ray, while Universal and Paramount back HD DVD.

Paramount is poised to drop its support of HD DVD after Warner Brothers’ recent backing of Sony’s Blu-ray technology, in a move that will sound the death knell of HD DVD and bring the home entertainment format war to a definitive end.

Paramount have also just said that they are going to support Blue-Ray over HD DVD, leaving it just being universal that is backing it, looks like HD DVD is dieing before it really got a chance to start.

The only major plus for HD DVD was apparently the extra features and now with a software upgrade your blu ray players have that. Add to that the Blu Ray media is considered harder to crack / pirate im not surprised people are leave them. The extra capacity of blu ray and shitty brownyred boxes of hd dvd were important too :)
