PS2 controller problems

I bought the Play.com USB adapter for my PS2 controller so I could play PES5 on the PC ... and I can only sort of get it to work.

Problem is XP believes it is a PSX controller - which means it doesn't recognise the analogue thumbsticks.

All the buttons work fine, and it rumbles etc too - I just need the thumbsticks to work!

I've installed the drivers that came with the adapter, uninstalled them, tried to get XP to recognise the new hardware automaticaly, searched for updated drivers etc. It just doesn't want to believe it's a PS2 controller.

Any advice?

For info I sorted this out last night.

Uninstalled all drivers relating to the gamepad - plugged it back inot the USB ... let XP decide what it was (at this point still a PSX controller) ...

... and then the magic bit ...

... I pressed the button which switches on the analogue thumbsticks on the gamepad. Lo and behold the PC accepted it as a PS2 controller.

I feel stupid.
