PS2/3 on a lap top?

Hi here is a question that is obviously not for me but for a young lad from the library i work at, he was wondering if its possible to hook up a ps2 or 3 to a laptop and how he would go about it.

i told him i have access to a wealth of highly knowledgable beings via the interweb... i couldnt find any of them so thought id ask you instead (OMG ive always wanted to say that hehehe!) would really appreciate it if you could help

if you mean a erm emulator ps3/2 on a laptop thats possible... tons on the internet u can even get a DS emulator and a wii one if u look hard enough

thanks Kei but i really have no idea what your on about lol like i said its nt or me its for a boy from my work and we were hoping someone would be able to post instrustions for him so i could just print them out and he could take it home

if the laptop has a video in (unlikely) then he wont need to buy anything however if he doesnt (probably this is the case) he will need to buy a video capture card such as this

also remember that this is for video only, he will need to buy an additional cable to feed the audio into the laptop (probably via the line in/mic for stereo sound) like this one:
3.5mm Stereo Plug to 2 RCA Leads 1.2M AV Adapter Cable on eBay, also, Audio Cables, Cables Connectors, Computing (end time 13-Dec-07 14:00:00 GMT)
or buy/use seperate speakers which are likely to sound better (but means carrying around extra speakers)

PS3 emulators dont exist, but there are some for ps2 (although i thought it was pretty poor personally) and ps1 games

Kind of hard to recommend things as i dont know what he already has to give the cheapest method, heres a patented Ezteq printable version : )

You can do it 2 ways, if he has a scart connector which comes as standard with the console:

He will need to buy a component cable (PlayStation 2 Component Video Cable) which looks like this:

Now the 2 audio connectors need to plug into the laptop somehow, and as you can see there is a big difference between what is on the end of those cables and the hole in the laptop where the audio in is,
this is where he has 2 options either buy a convertor to make the 2 left/right audio connectors into a standard jack which is a 3.5mm mini stereo male plug and two rca female jacks Y adapter (also called a RCA F to 3.5mm M 6' Y) and looks like this:

Or he could just buy some stereo speakers

For the video he will need to buy a "Video Capture Card", most laptops dont have one so the cheapest and easiest way is to just buy a USB one,
the only real pre-requsiite is that the card has a Component Input, so you take the 3 component connectors and plug it into the USB device, then in turn this connects to the laptop via a USB port.
Just plug usb video capture card in froogle/ebay or something and see if he can pick up a cheap one as he doesnt need anything fancy

Lol you mug! There are no emulators available for PS3 and the PS2 emulators cannot yet play commerical games.

In answer to the original question, you can use a laptop to connect a PS2/3 into and have access to it's screen but there is a problem. Very few laptops have a video in port of any kind so you would also need an adapter card that could take the video from the games console and convert it into something the laptop can use. The cost of this can be a bit steep and the quality isn't always worth it. So in short, it can be done but requires some messing around plus a fair few quid for the hardware.

As for emulators, in short they are programs that allow you to play games on your PC/Laptop that were designed for other systems such as Mega Drive and Nintendo 64 etc. Due to the complexity of modern video games consoles though you won't find any emulators for any of the newer hardware, there are Xbox1 and PS2 emulators in the works but it could be a year or two until they become viable.

The second picture is what i used when i didn't have an internet connection when i moved house, the wife wouldn't let me use the TV as she had soaps or some shit to watch. For sound i used the hi-fi and plugged my headphones into that.

One problem i did encounter was the fact that you really need a TV-in card and the related software. I assume most laptops come with this as standard these days? So shouldn't be a problem.

Anywhere near? Surely you mean it can play perhaps 6 games and even then only for a few minutes before they crash.

I follow the emulation scene very closely and we are a good year or two off a viable PS2 emulator, mainly because of the parallel nature of the PS2 hardware.
