So they realised that the high prices would not sell consoles eh, or it was just a marketing ploy, advertise a stupidly high price to get every talking about it then announce a price cut and everyones like ahh I'll get one now.

Works imo.

It seems is only for Japan bud, word leaking out of Sony U.S. is that they are sticking to the original price point. Sony are only lowering the Japan price on the base system because Wii pre-orders have been massive over there, far bigger than Nintendo have had for a console launch since SNES. Oh and that £225 launch price will never happen in the U.K. as you are using the current exchange rate and not the $1.5 = £1 exchange rate that all console makers have used for over a decade, as always us poor Brits will get stung. :( Expect at least £250 but more like £279.99.

Aye the anoucement says Japan only but with 5 months left to go and the fact they are changing their mind weekly fingers crossed for a base consol under £250 at release in UK. Yeah that was just a rough Yahoo price conversion.

I i think they realised the price was far to high with the Wii out at the same time combined with the fact not many people seem to care that it comes with blu-ray.

At the moment the anounced price of 499 euro so £350 price range will really put me off now if europe dose not get a price cut too.

You noticed the U.K. price on the Wii as well? We are getting severly humped on that as well. Japan is getting it for ($213 or 25,000 yen) £112 and we are paying £179.99 which is a huge fucking gap. Ok we get a game thrown in but it is a very basic sports package and will only sell for £20 in Japan anyway so we are getting humped anyway you look at it sadly.

I think Sony are just scared of a Nintendo resurgence in the homeland with the DS doing so well and the Wii with such a low pricepoint. History shows that Sony and Nintendo always leave the European market till last and charge us a roughly 25% premium as well, it has happened with EVERY console they have ever released. :(

Yeah :( It sucks to be us with new gadgets.

I bet sony though the Blu-Ray would be a masive hit and people would think the consol was better for having it but now it looks like no one wants it because of the big price they will have no choce but to subsadise it if they want to compete. Unless the 360 anounce that you have to get the HD DVD upgrade for the 360 to play new games.

The other thing i noticed was they have added the HDMI port to the cheap consol now which is a step in the right direction

New high end graphics card and 250gb harddrive, money gone :D I think that consoles are actually decent value for money in general, yes the PS3 has a bloated price tag but will drop over time, you do get alot of gaming power for your money out of an X360 and to a lesser extent the Wii though. Obviously if you have kids it is a bit safer to get them a console than a PC as well, alot less things can go wrong and that is before you even start to think about internet access.

That said though I could never give up my PC or PC gaming, totally hooked. Just a shame that 2006 has been such a piss poor year for new games so far. Company of Heroes is probably the only new game from the last 2 years that I would put in the 'Great' category.

Base consol will cost the same as a 360 with the HD DVD add on for Japan realease.

Fingers crossed Eurpoe get the cheap price too.

At roughly £225 if the price comes to the UK are more people likely to buy the consol?

no, because its still a hell of alot more expensive then the 360 cost. AND comes with less fluff no matter what u choose. too bad they cut the price, after the first price statement where they said they werent scared of it being to pricy i acually hoped they would stick to it so i could see those directors go hang themself after the humongous disaster PS3 would become...

was a great fan of playstation before this shit. now i cant wait to see it die.

if only they lasted as long as a PC to eh? PC's might cost abit to uppgrade, but it sure beats having to buy a completly new console every year.

having a console is great if all u wanna do is fire it up and start playing right away without having to bother with emails and stuff. well it used to be anyway.. now consoles and more and more a wannabie PC thats doing a shitty job at it...

yes i own a 360.

Eh? Who in thier right mind buys a new console every year? My last one was an Xbox about 4 years ago and I would still be playing it today if I didn't have my Xbox 360. I have never had a PC that has lasted 4 years or even close and been able to play all the latest games through that period.

The PS2 is sevens years old you show me a PC build 7 years ago for £200 that can run modern games.

Also The xbox 360 basic dose not out perform the ps3 basic the built in wifi and harddisk are both upgrades you have to pay for

If they bring out DAOC for the PS3, I'll buy one. But then you'll need a keyboard and mouse. Then you'll wanna hook up on line with your mates via Skype or MSN or Roger Wilco (or whatever). You'll need fast internet band width. You'll need min 1 Gig RAM. But you're stuffed if you wanna make a RVR movie. And can a games console run my business accounts ? No. Can a games console hook up all my MIDI stuff ? No.

They're 2 different animals. PC pwns in every department imo.

My cash will go on a new PC not another dust collector.

If all you wanna do is play games, a consoles for you.

I agree with pretty much all of that, time will tell what is going to happen and which was the better buy. It is best to wait and see, I am happy with my 360 and I am sure that PS3 owners will be happy with what they get. End of the day it is all about the games and we won't really know what either console is truely capable of for another year or two yet so all these arguements you about which console is gonna be best are kind of pointless.

PC is in many ways the best gaming platform, the problem is that the cost to keep your PC at the performance levels required for the latest games is far beyond what most families can afford. When you think of it over 5 years you are realistically looking at 2-3 PC upgrades to play the latest games and that all equates to £££. A console you buy the hardware and you run it into the ground until the next generation comes out 4-5 years down the line, the hardware is a one off cost and there are no extras to consider like operation system upgrade costs unlike the PC.

So yes, the PC is king but it does come at a much higher premium. Personally I am happy to pay but if the day comes when I have kids and a home to pay for then I know that console gaming is going to be a much more viable option financially.

I agree i tend to stick up for the PS3s alott because all i seem to see is people bashing them and the truth is no one has laid hand on one yet to tell how good or bad they are. I like my 360 as well :) But i have always been a playstation owner and only got a 360 for HD gaming a year early :)

Hey, good luck to anyone who can afford both, I know I would consider a PS3 a few years down the line when the price becomes affordable for me and if it has the games I want to play. Other people will go for the Wii, personally that isn't for me but I can see why some people would be attracted to it. I do think in 2-3 years time the Wii is going to really be showing it's age though whilst Xbox 360 and PS3 are just starting to show thier true potential but I suppose all that matters is that the games are delivering what the customers want.

Yeah the cost of upgrading parts of your PC every year adds up. For me, I get more value for money playing a MMORPG for a year than buying thirty £40 console games a year.

And what about cell phones ? Lots of ppl I know go through 2 or 3 new phones a year, at £200 a pop. Then you've got the monthly bills on top.

For me, a PC is not only better value for money, its more versitile.

And if they keep developping and developping consoles with more and more functionality, they become PC's ! Today's consoles have so many accessories, that functionality wise, you're better off with a PC.

PC v Console article

There is a distinct lack of inter-connectivity between the different console brands

Lol aye, mobile phones are fucking scary, now that is what I call a bottomless pit.

As for the console game prices only rich nutters pay full retail prices, Slainyou has a young son and he buys all his Xbox games second hand for 1/4 of the price. Consoles can be good value if you spend wisely. The problem with PC's is that you can't really choose to buy a new graphics card when your old one doesn't get the job done anymore, the whole nature of PC's is forced upgrades, both hardware and operating systems. I mean look at Vista, £200 for the O/S just to be able to play the next generation of PC games as they were intended to be played. Then you will really need a DX10 graphics card as well to get the best of those games, there is another £200. Only got 512mb-1gb memory, better go out and get some more, next generation PC games are going to really be making use of higher memory densities.

You see where I am going with this, on console you pay once for your hardware and the every time you spend more money you are getting another game. On PC you end up spending as much on hardware/os as you do on games over a 5 year period. Yes you do get alot more versatility for your money and that is what makes PC great but you do end up paying a premium for it.
