Can anyone on here point me in the direction of a decent proxy server that i can use? The inet here is heavily monitored, if you try and search for proxy servers they are all blocked.

Yeah i wouldnt advise using proxies if your network is heavily monitored tbh, if you are at work and are caught you can be fired for gross misconduct

Then get your IT dept to allow the sites you want for you, if they have decent ISA servers then they can allow sites just for your username linked with active directories

The problem is not from my companies side but rather the government here doesn't allow 100% free access to the web most pron for example is off limit.

You'll want a paid for proxy tierk, the free one's are all shit. I don't use one (yet), but I am sure someone here will know - if you ask the same question in the tech forum you'll get a better reply.

Your problem is that the government have probably instructed the ISP's to block access to the proxies, so even if you find one that works for now, it probably won't be long till it's blocked.

You could try - Proxify® anonymous proxy - surf the Web privately and securely but your government may have blocked all the known proxies.

I assume this is so you can get access to stuff those nice progressive Qataris don't want you to see? BananaVPN is pretty decent; €10 per month and iPlayer etc. all work over it (you can get UK, US or several other country versions) - I believe it works in the middle east as well (I was looking at a job in Kuwait last year and I checked). Won't work for torrents though (well it will, but they'll kick you off). If you can't get access to their homepage, get someone in the UK to set it up for you and send you the config.

I am afraid they don't only block porn i am not sure what system they use but it seems to be quite arbitrary. Some sites are open one day and then blocked again, seems really strange.

I have used one of these already and found it got blocked after a couple of days. Was quite peeved at the time

I will give this a go though if its recommended.

Rent a server in a server farm somewhere and then set up a VPN to that server and use it to download anything you want?

In laymans terms, for $10/month ( I can give you a link ), basically you route all your traffic via an external network thus bypassing any filters/restrictions/etc.

How about bypassing the local internet by using one of those sattelite internet connections? Avoids all the cat n mouse games with the blocking police?

Agreed but if its poor connection or none I'd chose poor. I think you'd notice it most browsing the web and if you tried uploading anything. If your just downloading larger files it should be quite good.
