I guess it´s pretty hard to find a definiton for progressive rock, since there are so many styles to "ptogress from". I think all the big classic names have been mentioned already.. Pink Floyd, Genesis, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, Alan Parsons Project. Did anyone mention Peter Gabriel btw? I think his solo work definitely deserves a spot on the list too. Maybe even the *very* early Supertramp, before they went "nice and soft".
Modern Proggers would be Tool, Mars Volta, maybe Muse and - with big reserevations - maybe even Bjork.

With a few notable exceptions progrock is an exercise in self indulgence or de-masculisation (or both ala 'king crimson'). Unfortunately this music can sound 'compelling' and 'complicated' at first listen so it easily draws you in as it did to me

Still I would say Pink floyd is the obvious place to start the prog rock education.

Indeed, they're not as bad as some of the music around at the moment though. (Look at the time from Genesis to now =D)

I was being teh funneh!

I had the misfortune of being at Glasto when Yes played and i can safely say they are the most tedious band ever, especially when they take themselves seriously. The only saving grace is that Wakeman knows they are up their own arses and takes the piss out of himself quite regularly.
