Ofcourse using sources that don't tickle the academic glandula the right way, might mean that the teaching community won't accept it. In that case though, you can rebuttle that for things like flash, gaming magazines and books by random game industry people are like the works of stephen hawking.

In regards to English academia, your comments count for shit unless you have published academic journals or are recognised by the academic community. That's the way it is.

In regards to english academia, they perhaps need to choose their topics with their own anality in mind :D

For those who do not know what is expected (about 20 seconds of googling, I won't pretend it has anything to do with the subject, I work in finance I just noticed the first reference):

The smart internet

This is an example of an academic paper. It is the format and standard that would be expected of final year undergraduate students in the UK. Notice that there are 34 credible (ie professional) references in just 11 pages. At no point do they reference some bloke on this internet forum who says he has 10 years experience.

They will have made a point and used exisiting, peer reviewed, published articles to back that up. If you want to score highly do the same. I would urge you to only search through google scholar and your universities journal library for relevant references. Websites and books are fairly amatuerish.

The suggestion that this industry is somehow different to every other field of human endeavor is simply not true. There will be specialists, academics and peer reviewed professionals that you can reference with no problem.

I would be extremely surprised if someone has not completed a PhD on or around the subject of flash.

@Pez: Just put him on ignore.

In one on my assignments I had to do a comparison between silverlight and flash. This isnt the problem, but the teacher said I was bordering plagurism as it was my opinion and didnt state it from a professional.

Now who could be a professional opinion in this case. I mean i cant quote adobe as they will obviously say its better, and likewise with microsoft.

Anyone know of any people, books or professionals i can reference to back my points up?

In a situation like this, it is very unlikely to find a truely unbiased opinion.

While both microsoft and adobe will certainly be bias in favour of their own products they can't lie about their product. They will almost certainly mention the things their product does best, while ignoring the bits there product does not so well. But if you look at both sources, you should be able to draw a balanced conclusion.

Another source that you should probably use is Steve Jobs (Apple) once again that will be biased but he is certainly an expert in the field.

Also if you find some papers you can't get access to (ie you can only see the abstract and not the whole article), drop me a pm with a link to it and I will see if I have access to it for you.

Having studied abroad and having know a lot of others who have done the same, this usually rings true for universities around the world. If a source isn't academically recognised, then it can't easily be verified as fact, it could as easily be conjecture. This should be true for academic degree.

The only alternative is, as mentioned earlier I believe, to carry out your own extensive research, using whatever approved protocols are applicable and to document everything in minute detail with the approval (and hopefully funding) of the department running your course.

When did i say he should? Hmm? No where, thank you.

And as far as the industry being different, it is when you're considering source material. It is in a lot of other ways too, but hey, what wuld i know compared to someone who's not worked there.

If you can find a PhD in flash, then show it to English. Hell, find one article on the net that you find "academically acceptable by all standards and peer reviews". Otherwise i think i might have a good idea on where to find published work on it that is accepted in the industry, and as such i've given that advice to English. You, bugger off already.

Cadelin, just drop it.

And that's about all i'll say about it, since people are starting the usual misquote/spin propaganda.

I've answered English, given some advice that might help him find the work and am not getting into a fight with some academia snobs :p

I've only just read the first page, but your lecturer does not understand the world plagiarism. I'd get a different lecturer quick.

well believe it or not you can actually self plagurism.

Self-plagiarism (also known as "recycling fraud"[19]) is the reuse of significant, identical, or nearly identical portions of one’s own work without acknowledging that one is doing so or without citing the original work. Articles of this nature are often referred to as duplicate or multiple publication. In addition to the ethical issue, this can be illegal if copyright of the prior work has been transferred to another entity.

I dont think it was this, but the fact i didnt reference it from some professional in the field, it might be something like it tho.
