problems with Nero and InCD

I've been using Easy CD and DirectCD for ever and I decided to get some better burning software, so I thought I'd have a go at Nero.

Now I've got an old CD with Nero 4.0 and it, and first thing it tells you is that Nero wont work with DirectCD and suggests using InCD instead, which is also on the disk. InCD in turn doesn't like DirectCD being installed so that needs to go first.

So I get rid of DirectCD, install InCD and Nero.

Firstly, InCD doesn't like my existing CDRWs even though its supposed to be a "universal" data format, I have to turn off the "Packet Writing" option to get them to read, and even then its a bit dodgy.

Then I find out InCD has a newer version that will not read older versions of InCD, so I attempt to upgrade InCD, difficult because the Ahead website is up and down like a ho's knickers and finally I get the updates for both Nero and InCD.

Upgrading InCD breaks my PC, will not boot into Windows, some hours later I've had to dump InCD and Nero and I'm back to DirectCD which is working fine.

So, does anyone know of any good burning software that is NOT Nero and can preferably work with DirectCD, also would it be worth looking at Easy CD 5.0 now ?

TIA

Packet writing software sucks arse, didn't think there was a universal format for packet writing either.

I use HotBurn becasue its easy. Most of the time I just want to burn a quick data or audio CD and not give a toss about how its done. Works every time.

The advanced options are there if you need them but tbh, HotBurn is so reliable I never use them. MY CD-R is old and crap, too.
